The K78 is the flagship distance of the Swissalpine and the direct continuation of the race Andrea Tuffli founded in Davos in 1986 as the first high alpine mountain run in Switzerland. Since 2025 it has been run in Flims Laax: 78 kilometres from the floor of the Rhine Gorge at 620 metres up to almost 2,650 metres at Crap Masegn, advertised with 4,624 metres of climbing and a 22 hour cut-off.

Course & Elevation

The gun goes at 05:00 in the dark at Prau la Selva in Flims. After a short 2.3 kilometre ramp the course falls for fourteen kilometres to 627 metres into the Rhine Gorge, the Ruinaulta carved out by the Flims rockslide some 9,000 years ago. If you are down there at sunrise you run forest roads and narrow paths high above the Vorderrhein.

At kilometre 15 the day turns serious with a kilometre and a half averaging 16 percent out of the gorge towards Trin. From kilometre 21 comes the first climb of the highest category: 8.8 kilometres at an average 14.4 percent and 1,271 metres of gain over Alp Mora, where the glacial mills of the Val Maliens sit. After a plateau around 2,100 metres the route drops into the high valley of Bargis, and from kilometre 39 the second climb of the same category waits: 7.2 kilometres at 16.1 percent and 1,156 metres up to the Flimserstein and Cassons.

The high point is around 2,650 metres shortly after kilometre 60, in the middle of the UNESCO Sardona tectonic arena with the Tschingelhörner and the Martinsloch. From there eighteen kilometres of descent remain, over Plaun and through the Flims forest, past the turquoise Caumasee and along the Trutg dil Flem, which runs straight through the Stenna Center, back to the finish. Around 860 participants came to the festival in 2026, which brings every distance together in one finish area on a single Saturday.

Pacing Strategy

Only 8 percent of this course sits in the flat band, against 28.5 percent steep uphill and 28.2 percent steep downhill. Planning a finish time from an average pace does not work here. Think in sections instead, and plan both big climbs as hiking passages with poles rather than running sections.

The trap comes before the first climb. The fourteen kilometres of descent into the Rhine Gorge arrive early, feel effortless and are almost always run too fast. They cost your quadriceps exactly the eccentric reserve you will need from kilometre 60 to 78. Save twenty minutes there and you give them back twice over at the end.

The race is decided between kilometre 21 and kilometre 46, where the two highest category climbs stack more than 2,400 metres of ascent back to back. Hold an intensity there at which you can still eat and drink, and use the feed stations deliberately: your own cup or bottle is mandatory and nothing is poured into anything else. Add to that the spread of conditions: a head torch start in the dark, midday heat on the exposed high ground and cold wind at 2,600 metres all fall on one day.

Training plan for Swissalpine: 12-week build

For age group runners the effort lasts roughly ten to eighteen hours; the 22 hour limit does not expire until 03:00 on Sunday morning. The demand has nothing in common with a road race: most of the time goes on fast uphill hiking and technical downhill running, and flat running economy barely matters.

The most important training content is therefore climbing under load. Through the spring build sessions of 1,000 to 1,500 metres of ascent in one go, with poles and with the pack you will carry on the day, and repeat them the next morning on tired legs. Two such back to back weekends reproduce the demand of the climbs at kilometre 21 and 39 better than any interval programme.

Downhill running matters just as much. The course asks for fourteen kilometres of descent before the first big climb and eighteen kilometres of descent after the last, both on forest and mountain paths. Train that eccentric load deliberately: long easy descents, technical ground with a loose surface, and descents placed on purpose at the very end of a long session.

The conditions to prepare for are the night start, the altitude and the mandatory kit. The course moves between 620 and 2,650 metres, high summer weather here can go either way, and the organiser publishes a required equipment list. Test your head torch, rain layer, pack and your own drinking cup in training rather than on race day, and rehearse an hourly carbohydrate intake over sessions of six hours and more.
