Torrent Run & Walk: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The Torrent Run & Walk is a pure uphill race: 14.6 kilometres from the Sportarena in Leukerbad at 1,411 metres to the Rinderhütte top station at 2,313 metres, with 1,180 metres of climbing and virtually no counter-ascent. Almost half the route is steep uphill, so it is climbing ability that counts here, not running speed.
Course & Elevation
The course leaves Leukerbad along the Römerweg and Dorfstrasse and is already climbing hard by kilometre 1.5: 2.65 kilometres at almost 11 per cent on average through the Tschafiuwald. What follows is the hardest section of the day, a 1.1 km ramp averaging 23 per cent with pitches above 30 per cent, taking you past the Mantschetgraben up to the Majingalp at around 1,930 metres. Between kilometre 7 and 8.5 the path gains another 170 metres before a short level stretch runs beneath the Rinderhalte to the Torrentalp.
The closing section from kilometre 10.75 is the long one: 3.6 kilometres at nearly 10 per cent for 354 metres of gain, over the Chummerbargga to the Rinderhütte top station. In total 46 per cent of the route counts as steep uphill and barely five per cent is flat; the 290 metres of descent are spread over short linking passages.
You run on waymarked Valais hiking paths inside the Pfyn-Finges nature park, looking across at the Gemmiwand, Leukerbad and the Rhône valley. Organiser Laufsportevents Winkler lists six aid and first-aid posts; at the finish at 2,313 metres there is a gift from the region and free day entry to the Leukerbad thermal baths. Run and walk share the same course and are scored separately.
Pacing Strategy
An uphill race with more than 80 metres of climbing per kilometre is not thought about in pace but in effort. The first kilometre and a half through the village is the only genuinely runnable part; start racing there and you arrive at the 23 per cent ramp at kilometre 4.4 already above threshold, where you will lose more than any fast opening could ever gain.
The race is decided on exactly that ramp and on the long closing climb from the Torrentalp. The short steep section is too steep to run for almost everyone: fast, powerful hiking with hands on the thighs is not capitulation there, it is the more economical way to move. The final climb, by contrast, is marginally runnable at just under ten per cent, and anyone who has saved something for it passes people in numbers.
The trap is the level stretch between kilometre 9 and 10.5 beneath the Rinderhalte. It arrives after 800 metres of climbing and invites you to push again; that is precisely where you should eat, drink and gather your legs for the final 3.6 kilometres. Altitude adds to it: the finish sits at 2,313 metres, and in July it can be hot in the sun and windy on the ridge at the same time.
Training plan for Torrent Run & Walk: 12-week build
Allow one and a half to three hours for the 14.6 kilometres depending on your level. The demand is a sustained, largely aerobic effort near threshold, broken by two or three sections where the gradient forces you above it. In muscular terms it is a strength-endurance event more than a running one.
The key training content is long uphill sessions of 600 to 1,000 metres of gain in one push, alternating running and hiking. Train fast uphill hiking deliberately as its own technique: on the pitches above 20 per cent essentially the whole field walks, and a runner who can only run loses time and strength at once.
Prepare the decisive phases separately. For the short 23 per cent ramp, intervals of three to five minutes on very steep ground work well; for the 3.6 km closing climb, long even ascents of 30 to 45 minutes, ideally at the end of an already tiring session. Descending technique is secondary here, since there is only 290 metres of downhill in total.
Two conditions matter. First, altitude: the start is at 1,411 metres and the finish at 2,313, with the closing kilometres already in noticeably thinner air, so if you live at sea level try to fit in one or two preparation sessions above 1,500 metres. Second, the surface: waymarked Valais hiking paths with gravel, roots and steps, where sure-footedness and ankle stability are worth more than road speed.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
