Trail della Liberazione.

The 42 km Trail della Liberazione leaves Piazza Regina Margherita in Corvaro and points uphill almost at once, with the longest and steepest climb of the day waiting before the five-kilometre mark. It asks for climbing legs at the start and something left over for a restless final third.

Trail della Liberazione 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

A few hundred metres in, the first climb starts: almost two and a half kilometres at close to twelve percent on average. Barely past it, the core of the course begins at km 4.65, 3.4 km averaging nearly 18 percent with ramps beyond 30 percent. A long stretch without any real climbing follows, until two moderate ascents at km 16.4 and just before km 20 close out the first half.

The final third is built differently. Between km 30 and 39, four short climbs of a little over a kilometre each come one after another, the steepest from km 32.1 at almost 15 percent on average. None of them is long on its own, but they arrive with more than 30 km already in your legs.

Corvaro is a stage on the Cammino dei Briganti, and the route runs through ancient beech woods. There is a refreshment station at halfway, and sweets and a pasta party at the finish. With more than 2,000 metres of climbing, this is not a marathon on dirt but a full day in the mountains.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Trail della Liberazione.

Start

Start under control

The two biggest climbs come first, and that is exactly what makes the start dangerous. Treat the opening eight kilometres as a race and you pay for it twice later on. Take both climbs at a conversational effort and hike the ramps beyond 30 percent on purpose rather than trying to force them.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The long section after the big climb is where you gain time cheaply: run steadily, eat, drink. Since the only aid comes at halfway, carry enough fluid to cover each half of the course yourself.

Finish

Spend what is left

The race is decided between km 30 and 39. The four short climbs there are the real trap, because each one looks manageable and tempts you to run it all. Runners who held back in the morning still jog these, and they are the ones passing others in the last kilometres.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Trail della Liberazione: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners should expect roughly five and a half to eight hours. The effort is mostly aerobic but never steady: long, very steep climbs with hiking sections alternate with stretches you can run, and the steepest ramps push your heart rate high for a few minutes at a time.

Core

Train race pace

Two phases decide the day. The climb from km 4.65 demands 3.4 km of strong, economical uphill hiking. The run of short ramps in the final third asks for the opposite: one more push after hours on the trail, when your quads are already tired from all the up and down.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Build long runs with plenty of climbing and shape them like the race, with the hardest ascent early and several short ones at the end. Add steep hill intervals at hiking pace, strength endurance work for calves and quads, and regular downhill running so your legs know both sides of every climb.

Race week

Arrive fresh

A race date of 25 April puts the build-up in winter and early spring. Use the long sessions to practise eating on the move as well: over six hours or more, with one aid station at halfway, you need your own supplies, and your stomach should already know them.
