The bike is five laps of an 8 kilometre city circuit along both banks of the Rhine, crossing the city's bridges. Two hundred and sixty-nine metres of climbing over 40 kilometres and 61 percent flat sound moderate, but they are spread across nothing but short ramps: each lap holds a rise of around 430 metres at 4.5 percent, plus the constant up-and-down onto the bridges. The rules are unusual: city bikes, mountain bikes and road bikes are permitted, time-trial bikes, aerobars and e-bikes are not.

The run is four laps of a 2.5 kilometre out-and-back along the Rhine towards the harbour. Twenty metres of climbing over ten kilometres, 85 percent flat, and a net eight metres downhill. Triathlon Basel reaches its third edition in 2026 and is open from age 16.

Pacing Strategy

On a distance labelled Olympic, three kilometres of swimming is the section fewest people are prepared for. With the current it takes less time than three kilometres in a lake, but it still demands 25 to 45 minutes of continuous swimming. The craft is line choice: stay in the main flow, sight off the buildings and bridges on the bank rather than a buoy far ahead, and waste no energy fighting for position; with a rolling individual start, a place in the field means little anyway.

On the bike the rules change the task fundamentally. Without aerobars there is no sustained aerodynamic position to rest in, and a course with bridge ramps and corners would not allow a long steady pull in any case. Ride by effort, hold power over the crest of each bridge ramp rather than easing at the top, and accelerate smoothly out of the corners: across five laps, kicks add up fast.

The race is decided on bike laps four and five and then on the third run lap. The classic trap is the swim exit: after three kilometres in the river, solid ground feels strange, and the temptation is to compensate for the disorientation with a hard first bike kilometre. Treat the first five minutes on the bike deliberately as a transition phase.

On the late-August date: the Rhine is relatively warm by then, leaving the wetsuit question open, and the city circuit offers little shade around midday.
