Course & Elevation

The swim is a single 1.9-kilometre lap in the Pocking lake, right beside the Rottal Stadion. From there the day runs on two circuits, each covered four times.

The bike lap measures around 22.8 kilometres on fully closed roads with turnaround points; overtaking is banned outright in the underpass section. Its profile is Lower Bavarian rolling country in miniature: a good 55 percent flat, roughly 22 percent each gently up and down, with one pronounced rise of 600 metres at just under three percent, spiking to six. Over four passes that adds up to around 530 metres of climbing, distributed, not concentrated.

The closing half marathon runs four laps of a flat five-kilometre circuit along the lake. The elevation band stays extremely narrow at around eleven metres and there are no real rises. The first and last 200 metres of each lap are narrow through the underpass section: over four laps, a factor worth planning for.

Pacing Strategy

On a course without a long climb, evenness decides it. Ride the four bike laps in a narrow output window; the one notable rise at lap kilometre 13 is too short at 600 metres to gain anything, but over four passes long enough to burn matches if you attack it every time.

The third bike lap is decisive. The opening buzz has gone, the finish is still distant, and because the lap repeats identically you already know exactly what is coming: that is where riders who chose a pace separate from riders who merely followed one.

The main trap is the flat run profile. Four laps on a course with virtually no elevation give you no natural brake: run the first lap to feel rather than target pace and you fold on the third. Plan your fuelling lap by lap and only lift the pace on the final circuit.

Training plan for Sparkasse Passau Triathlon Niederbayern: 12-week build

For the middle distance in Pocking, expect roughly four and a half to seven hours depending on your level; the overall cut-off is eight hours. The demand is aerobic throughout and unusually uniform: neither the bike nor the run forces you over threshold, but nor does either hand you recovery on a descent.

What decides the race is not individual climbs but the third and fourth bike laps and the second half of the half marathon, precisely the phases where fuelling errors and an over-eager start become visible.

Training should therefore centre on long, steady loads: rides of three to four hours with extended blocks just under middle-distance race intensity, ridden in race and aero position, plus long runs with tempo sections at the end. Short VO2max intervals are secondary here.

More important is fuelling and position work: drinking and eating at race pace, multi-hour aero endurance, and at least two extended brick sessions of 60 to 90 minutes riding plus 30 to 45 minutes running at target pace. Since both courses are lapped, it helps to train on loops as well and to control your pace across several identical circuits.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
