Valdobbiadene Pianezze Trail.

The Valdobbiadene Pianezze Trail sends you out of Piazza Marconi straight into the Treviso Prealps: nearly half of the day's climbing sits in the first four kilometres, and late on the loop drops more than 1,000 metres almost without a break. Getting round it well takes strong steep hiking and, above all, quads that still work going downhill.

Valdobbiadene Pianezze Trail 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The loop starts and finishes on Piazza Marconi in Valdobbiadene and in between takes paths, woods and ridges through the Treviso Prealps. There is no warm-up: right behind the start comes the longest climb of the day, which gathers 675 metres of ascent in about 3.5 kilometres. It only eases above 900 metres, leaving you nearly two quiet kilometres before a short swell reaches about 1,000 metres.

Just after kilometre 7 the second serious climb begins, and at Lavei you stand at almost 1,400 metres. That is about eleven kilometres done. After a short dip, the third ramp arrives at kilometre 13, only a kilometre long but as steep as the opener, and carries you to the high point at just over 1,500 metres. To kilometre 18 the route rolls gently downwards, then it sheds more than 1,000 metres in about five kilometres. One small rise remains, and you are back on the piazza.

Valdobbiadene sits in a UNESCO heritage area below Monte Cesen, and the event sees itself firmly as a mountain race. It has been held since 1996, with the 24 km added in 2019. The 12 km and the Cronoscalata, a purely uphill race, run on the same day. Across all distances the organiser counted more than 700 entrants in 2026.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Valdobbiadene Pianezze Trail 2027.

Start

Start under control

More than half of this loop is steep, up or down, so a per-kilometre average tells you very little. Race it on effort. The start on the piazza tempts you to run the first ramp, but at nearly 19 percent on average that buys seconds and costs minutes later. The quiet stretch between kilometres 4 and 5.5 is your first window to eat and bring your heart rate down.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided in the second half. The ramp at kilometre 13 arrives with almost 1,200 metres of ascent already in your legs. If you can still climb it steadily, you can properly run the rolling kilometres to 18, and that is where time can be made up.

Finish

Spend what is left

The biggest trap is the final descent, which looks like free time. Let it go from the top and your quads are finished long before the valley floor, with the last kilometres turning into a grind. Start it under control, on short steps. Food and drink are available at places including Pra' de Vanin and Agriturismo Balcon. Pianezze is the last station, so take what you need there to reach the finish.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Valdobbiadene Pianezze Trail 2027: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners are out for roughly 3:15 to 4:45 hours here, and much of that is climbing on foot, not running. The effort stays mostly aerobic but never settles: long, hard spells on the hills, recovery on the quieter stretches, and heavy braking work for the legs at the end.

Core

Train race pace

Two phases shape your day. The first is the way up to Lavei, where most of the climbing falls and you have to go steep with no easy running beforehand. The second is the long descent to the valley, which asks for eccentric strength after your legs have already worked for several hours.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The key session is therefore the long mountain outing with at least 1,000 metres of ascent, deliberately ended on a long, steep downhill. Add weekly intervals on truly steep ground, hiked briskly instead of run, so that this movement feels like race pace. Lunges and slow squats prepare your quads, so that the downhill work does not begin on race day.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The race falls at the end of May, which puts your decisive weeks in spring. Train on paths and in woods then, since that is where the course runs, and practise eating and drinking on the climbs during long sessions. If you live somewhere flat, a treadmill incline or long stairways can cover the ascent. Nothing there replaces the descent, so plan a few weekends in the mountains.
