Wendover Woods Half Marathon, 10k & 5k: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The Wendover Woods Half Marathon runs twice around the hilly forest of Wendover Woods in Buckinghamshire, on trails and paths that stay open to walkers and cyclists on a June Sunday. Two laps mean the same climbs twice, and the second pass decides how the race turns out.
Course & Elevation
Start and finish are at Race HQ by the BBQ area, a short walk from the car park and the Go Ape site. The half marathon goes at 09:30, a quarter of an hour before the 10k and 5k. Each lap is a little over ten and a half kilometres and includes a short out-and-back dog leg the 10k does not run. From the high point at the start the course first drops for about three kilometres, then comes the steepest climb of the lap: close to 75 metres in 800 metres, with sections over ten percent. After a rolling middle section in the valley the route climbs almost continuously from about 8 km back to the start, the hill the organiser specifically warns about.
Underfoot it is forest trail with roots and two stretches of slippery flint. After rain it turns soft and muddy, after dry days it is hard. Water is at 2.5 and 5 miles on each lap and at the finish. Only bone-conduction headphones are allowed.
Pacing Strategy
The first three kilometres downhill invite a start that is too fast. Run them relaxed and controlled, because straight after comes the steepest ramp of the lap, where you can gain nothing early and lose a lot. Walk short stretches if your heart rate runs away there.
The key is the long drag back from about 8 km on the first lap: take it at your limit and you arrive at the steep ramp for the second time around 14 km with nothing left. Share your effort so that lap two is no slower than lap one; that is the real achievement here. The last two and a half kilometres climb all the way to the finish, so keep something for them.
Training plan for Wendover Woods Half Marathon, 10k & 5k: 12-week build
For most age-group runners this half takes clearly longer than on the road, often two to three hours. The effort switches constantly between easy downhill running, steep short climbs with walking breaks and longer moderate drags.
The second lap is what counts. Long runs of 90 to 150 minutes on hilly ground, where you run the same hill twice and deliberately hold the same speed the second time, prepare for exactly that. A weekly session of two to four minute hill repeats at eight to ten percent builds the legs for the ramp that follows the descent.
Practise downhill running on uneven forest ground too: the opening kilometres of each lap fall away, and tired quads make themselves felt on the way back up. The organiser recommends trail shoes, and you should have trained in them on both wet and dry ground.
In June it can get warm even in the woods. Carry your own fluid and practise drinking on the move, because there are only two stations per lap.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
