The mountain-bike course of the XTERRA Full Distance at the XTERRA O-SEE Challenge is decidedly hilly: across 37 kilometres it stacks over 1,000 metres of climbing into three marked ascents, the steepest with ramps beyond 22 percent. Course & Elevation
After a 1,500-metre swim in the Olbersdorfer See, the XTERRA Full Distance sends athletes onto a 37-kilometre mountain bike loop through the Zittau Mountains. With 1,049 metres of climbing, a good 28 vertical metres per kilometre, it is the heart of what is regarded as Germany's best-known and most demanding cross triathlon, held since 2000 and part of the international XTERRA series since 2004.
The first half belongs to two long climbs: from kilometre 6 the trail rises for 3.7 kilometres at a good 6 percent and 224 metres of gain, and from kilometre 11.3 a brutal 2-kilometre section follows, averaging nearly 11 percent with ramps beyond 22 percent. A rolling middle part with two short pitches of around 10 percent at kilometres 21.5 and 23 leads to the final major obstacle at kilometre 26.3, 1.4 kilometres at 11.6 percent with peaks above 23 percent. In total, more than a quarter of the course is steep climbing or steep descending, and flat recovery sections are scarce.
Around 1,500 athletes from all over the world, from the international elite to first-timers, turn the lakeside race weekend into Saxony's most international triathlon event, with a festival atmosphere for the whole family.
Pacing Strategy
The course spreads its 1,000-plus metres of climbing across three decisive ascents and is laid out as one big loop — so your strength has to last the full distance. The first long climb from kilometre 6 runs over a good 3.5 kilometres at six percent; ride it deliberately restrained, because the truly hard mountain follows right after at kilometre 11, averaging almost eleven percent with ramps over 22. That's the key section: overcook it and you'll have nothing left for the last big climb at kilometre 26 — another 165 metres at twelve percent.
Between the mountains the technical descents decide things: clean lines and brake control gain more than watts, and let you rest the legs briefly. The trap is the double opening of long climb into steep climb — meter it so you still have reserves for the final mountain and the trail run to come.
12-Week Preparation
Most age-group athletes spend roughly one and three-quarter to two and a half hours on the mountain bike loop, sandwiched between a 1,500-metre swim and a 10-kilometre trail run. The effort is anything but steady: ramps beyond 20 percent repeatedly force short anaerobic spikes, followed by technical descents where the legs rest but concentration and upper body keep working.
The race is decided on the three long climbs at kilometres 6, 11.3 and 26.3. The last of them, averaging 11.6 percent after more than 26 kilometres of racing, splits the field and determines what kind of legs you carry onto the run course.
Three priorities should shape your preparation. First, strength-oriented climbing: repeated efforts of 3 to 10 minutes on steep gradients, plus short maximal accelerations on ramps above 15 percent, ideally at low cadence, because off-road you rarely get to shift freely on a climb. Second, bike handling: with over a quarter of the loop made up of steep ups and downs, confident descenders gain many minutes here without spending any energy for them. Third, transition training in both directions, from swimming onto the bike and from the bike into running stride, so the change of effort pattern works at race intensity. If you can, seek out training loops with a similar amount of climbing per kilometre, because 28 vertical metres per kilometre off-road is almost impossible to replicate on tarmac.
