Yr Wyddfa Sea to Summit.

The Yr Wyddfa Sea to Summit leaves Caernarfon Castle at sea level and takes you to the top of Wales's highest mountain within a single day. It is fully waymarked and supported, but it asks its real question late: the big climb only starts after 34 kilometres, and that is what you prepare for.

Yr Wyddfa Sea to Summit 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

From the castle the course gains height steadily for ten kilometres, until you reach the first steep ramp at about 350 metres above the sea. It starts at km 10.4 and climbs for two and a half kilometres at an average of 13 per cent. The crest sits just under 700 metres, yet it is only a rehearsal, because the route then drops back below 200 metres.

The middle section is where this course shows its character. Between km 20 and km 34 it keeps losing height in waves, until it reaches its lowest point since the start, barely 50 metres above the sea. By the end of this stretch you are almost as low as you were at the castle, with nothing left to show for the early climbing. Orange arrows mark the entire way, and a route file is offered as well, though you do not need it. After the second pit stop the organiser offers a short summit option, which is not a race distance of its own.

Then comes the mountain: a little over 900 metres of ascent in six kilometres. The gradient averages more than 15 per cent and passes 25 in places. The summit is not the finish, though. After roughly 41 kilometres the route turns downhill, and the last six kilometres give back nearly all of that height.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Yr Wyddfa Sea to Summit.

Start

Start under control

The early steep ramp after km 10 is the trap of the day. On fresh legs it feels manageable, yet it brings you no closer to the summit, because you hand the height straight back. Take it as calmly as you plan to take the last one, and let the descent afterwards roll without braking hard or chasing it.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

Between km 20 and km 34 the ground is at its most runnable, and that is exactly where the mistakes get made. Trying to win back time lost on the first hill here costs you twice on the second. Hold a pace at which you can keep eating, and leave the pit stops feeling you still have something in hand.

Finish

Spend what is left

The race is decided between km 35 and km 41. On gradients like these an even walking rhythm matters more than any running stride. Save something for the top as well: over the six kilometres down, empty thighs cost a lot of time all over again. Since the route may change for safety or operational reasons, split the day into these sections rather than fixed kilometre splits.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Yr Wyddfa Sea to Summit: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect something like seven to eleven hours, depending on your form. The effort is aerobic almost throughout, a long even day of running and brisk walking. The only spikes are the ones you create yourself on the steep ramps, and each of them is repaid later.

Core

Train race pace

What makes the preparation unusual is the order. More than 900 metres of unbroken ascent wait for you when over 30 kilometres are already done. Build your longest sessions so the hardest hill comes last: three to four hours on fairly level ground, then a long climb. A fresh day in the mountains does not train this at all.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The main focus is fast walking on gradients of 15 per cent and steeper. Practise on long slopes or stairs until you can hold the rhythm for an hour or more, and strengthen calves and hips to support it. Downhill running on tired legs matters just as much: finish long sessions with a steep descent, so the closing kilometres are not your first meeting with that kind of load.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The race falls in late September, and between the coast and the summit you rise by more than 1,000 metres. So test kit and food on long mountain days, not just on your home loop. Above all, practise eating after five or six hours, because that is roughly when you reach the foot of the last mountain. Thanks to the waymarking, navigation takes nothing away from your preparation.
