Baltimore Running Festival: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The organiser places the start by M&T Bank Stadium and the shared finish at McKeldin Plaza. Between them the route goes north through Druid Hill Park and past the zoo, east through Charles Village and Clifton Park, around Lake Montebello and then back to the harbour.

This is an urban marathon of asphalt, park sections and a large spectator setting. It is not merely a flat waterfront loop: the organiser highlights the climbs between miles 17 and 19 as Heartbreak Hill, so the decisive work comes late.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Baltimore Running Festival.

Start

Start under control

Pace the first half by effort rather than by the flat harbour atmosphere. The northern sections and the late climbs require reserves; the Heartbreak Hill phase is where even effort matters more than an aggressive split.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The main trap is converting the city sections and spectator energy into marathon pace too early.

Finish

Spend what is left

Stay controlled until after the late climbing group, then use the return towards the water.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Baltimore Running Festival: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Prepare for several hours of steady aerobic running with a late strength test. Long asphalt runs should regularly include rolling sections rather than only flat kilometres.

Core

Train race pace

Make the final 30 to 45 minutes of some long runs gently rising or rolling so that the Heartbreak Hill section is not your first climb under fatigue.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Add controlled downhill running for the return. Mid-October can be mild but warming.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Practise fuelling on long urban runs and choose shoes that suit the many asphalt kilometres.
