Rivers & Rails Marathon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The Rivers & Rails Marathon links three historic towns on two rivers: from Brunswick, Maryland, it follows the C&O Canal Towpath to Harpers Ferry and Bolivar in West Virginia and back. Only the riverside path is flat; in between come short, very steep pitches up into the old town and onto Bolivar Heights.

Course & Elevation

The start is at the entrance to the C&O Canal Towpath in Brunswick, between the MARC commuter-rail lot and the Potomac. The first eleven kilometres or so run almost level on the towpath beside the river. Then everything changes: the course crosses the Potomac, climbs steeply into Harpers Ferry and reaches its high point, a little over 180 m, on the section through Bolivar. The turnaround is on Bolivar Heights.

The way back passes through Harpers Ferry again, where almost a kilometre of climbing waits around km 24, and crosses both rivers back to the towpath. The last twelve kilometres or so are flat again, along the Potomac back to Brunswick.

The appeal lies in the history along the route: the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah at Harpers Ferry, the bridges between Maryland and West Virginia, Civil War ground and Brunswick's railroad heritage. 2026 is the first edition, and the organiser still calls the linked course map provisional.

Pacing Strategy

Split the race into three parts: flat towpath, hilly middle in West Virginia, flat towpath. The temptation is to run the flat opening at the goal pace of a flat marathon, and that is exactly what hurts from Harpers Ferry on.

The middle section, roughly km 11 to 30, decides the race. The climbs are short, some very steep, and walking the steepest parts is not a failure but often faster and cheaper. Run the descents through the old town under control to save your quads for later.

On the final flat run back to Brunswick every minute saved on the hills pays off. If you can still run evenly here, you will pass a lot of people.

Training plan for Rivers & Rails Marathon: 12-week build

Age-group runners should expect four to six and a half hours, longer than a flat marathon at the same fitness because of the climbs. The effort is long and aerobic, with a block of short, hard efforts in the middle.

So train long runs that start flat and turn hilly in the middle, and add short, steep hill repeats. Practise walking steep ramps on purpose and getting back into a run afterwards.

Downhill training matters: the descents through Harpers Ferry load the quads, and twelve flat kilometres still follow. Eccentric strength work and occasional downhill runs prepare you for that.

In mid-November the river valley can be cool in the morning; plan clothing for a cold start.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
