Bandera Endurance Trail Race.

At the Bandera Endurance Trail Race the 100 kilometres are the same technical 50-kilometre lap of the Hill Country State Natural Area in Texas, run twice. After lap one you know every ramp, and that is what makes lap two hard: it meets legs that have already taken roughly 900 metres of ascent in short, steep pieces.

Bandera Endurance Trail Race 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Tejas Trails takes the race through the Hill Country State Natural Area on Bandera Creek Road, and there are no long climbs here. The trail is technical and gnarly, rises and falls almost without pause, and between its short, steep hills keeps opening onto views across the Hill Country. Fully supported aid stations include Lodge, Equestrian, Chapas, Boyles, Nachos and Yaya.

The lap opens with its most restless part. From km 1 the trail climbs for just over a kilometre towards almost 600 metres, with short pitches above 20 percent, and more ramps follow at km 4 and km 9. By mid-lap the course has lost around 150 metres without ever settling, and at km 21 it turns as steep as it did at the start. Only in the second half of the lap, around Yaya, comes the flat race track, the one stretch for proper running. Close to the end of the lap, at km 47, arrives the steepest ramp of all.

Then it all starts again in the same order, with that last ramp waiting at km 96. None of these climbs gains much more than 80 metres. The race collects its roughly 1,800 metres of ascent through repetition, not from one big hill.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Bandera Endurance Trail Race 2027.

Start

Start under control

Barely a third of this course is flat and the rest is going up or down, so your watch tells you little on lap one. Pace by effort and hike the steep pitches from the very first ramp, even though at km 1 you could still run them. That running stride saves you almost nothing there, and you pay for it many hours later.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided between km 50 and km 60. At km 51, 54 and 58 the three early ramps stand in your way a second time within ten kilometres, now on tired quads, and on the technical downhills every careless step costs more than any climb. Get through that block evenly and you can still run the remaining 40 kilometres.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap is the race track on lap one. After so much rough ground the flat stretch around Yaya feels easy at a high pace, and nowhere do you overspend more quietly. Keep it relaxed the first time through. The second time it is where you can still gain time, if you have reserves, before the last ramp comes.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Base

Build the base

Age-group athletes can expect roughly 13 to 20 hours out here. The effort is aerobic but never steady: short hard ramps, careful descents and flat running alternate all day, and on technical ground your head has to work as long as your legs.

Core

Train race pace

The core of your preparation is what lap two demands: climbing and descending on tired legs. Two long sessions on hilly trail on consecutive days reflect that better than one extreme run, especially when the steep ground comes late on the second day. A training loop you run twice gets you closest to the race, because you feel how differently the same spot treats you the second time.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The ramps call for repeats of five to ten minutes on steep slopes, at a brisk hike as well as at a run, since fast hiking is your most important gear on race day. Downhill running on uneven ground deserves equal weight: strong quads and quick eyes for the footing decide whether you still move fluently beyond km 50.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Because food and drink change from station to station, use long runs to get used to different fuel rather than relying on one product. The early January date puts your longest sessions in December, so schedule them in good time.
