Bull Run Run 50 Miler 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The course is a double out-and-back. The first arm turns around km 16 and has you back where you started by km 28. The second, much longer arm does not turn until around km 54, and from there you head back to the starting point. Over the first four kilometres the trail drops more than 50 metres from the highest point of the day.

Underfoot it is nearly all dirt on narrow path, and the whole route stays between about 40 and just over 90 metres above sea level. The difficulty lies in repetition: no climb runs longer than a kilometre or gains more than 50 metres, yet only about a quarter of the distance is flat. Twelve aid stations break up the long day.

The finale opens around km 61, where the trail rises and falls twice by 30 to 45 metres. A quieter stretch follows close to the lowest level of the course, and then at km 78.5 comes the last ramp: 48 metres gained in 450 metres, steeper than 20 percent in places, taking back the descent of the opening kilometres.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Bull Run Run 50 Miler.

Start

Start under control

Divide this day by effort, not by kilometre splits. The 13-hour limit works out at about 15:30 per mile, and on a course with so little flat ground your pace swings between climb and descent anyway. Walk the steep ramps from the start, even when they are short and look runnable, because each one adds to a long list.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided between km 61 and the finish. Reach the two waves there with enough left to run their descents loosely and you can settle back into a run on the quieter stretch that follows. Treat them as a last act of force and you end up walking the easiest ground of the second half, with the final ramp dragging on accordingly.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits at km 28. You are back at your starting point, feeling good, and still only a little over a third of the way through with the longer arm ahead. Hold back noticeably until then, especially on the descents while your legs are fresh.

Base

Build the base

Age-group athletes can expect to be out for roughly 9 to 13 hours. The effort is aerobic throughout but never settles: you switch constantly between short climbing, descending and the odd flat stretch, and no long climb ever gives you a fixed rhythm to sit in.

Core

Train race pace

That mix shapes the preparation. Long runs belong on rolling, narrow ground rather than tarmac or forest road. Loops whose short rises gain 30 to 50 metres are ideal, because they mirror the course. Practise moving from a brisk walk back into a run while you are there, as this race will ask for it again and again.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The late phase demands legs that still work downhill. Add a block of repeated hills towards the end of your longest sessions, with deliberate downhill running, and stack two long days back to back so that you learn to place your feet safely on narrow path when tired. That prepares you for the waves from km 61 and for the closing ramp, which takes steep hiking strength on empty legs.

Race week

Arrive fresh

With the race in early April, your longest sessions fall in the winter months, so schedule them early and on paths you can actually run then. The twelve aid stations give you a natural beat: use long runs to practise eating and drinking regularly rather than waiting for hunger. A contingency course also exists for high water, so look over its line beforehand too.
