VITAMIN WELL Frauenlauf Berlin: Course, Route Profile & Map

The ten-kilometre race at the VITAMIN WELL Frauenlauf Berlin runs almost entirely on park paths through the Tiergarten, starting and finishing on the Straße des 17. Juni within sight of the Brandenburg Gate. The course is flat in the literal sense and has no rise worth naming. Chasing a time here means preparing for a high pace held absolutely evenly.

Course & Elevation

Start and finish share the same spot on the Straße des 17. Juni, with the finish arch doubling as the start arch and sitting noticeably closer to the Brandenburg Gate than in earlier years. From there the route runs a closed loop through the Tiergarten which, unlike the 5 km course, also opens up the northern half of the park. The measured track comes to a little over 10,000 metres and returns to the exact point where it began.

There is no elevation profile to speak of. The whole course sits in a band between 35 and 42 metres above sea level, a good 60 percent of it counts as level and the rest is minimal ripple with no steep section anywhere. The profile lists not a single rise that crosses the threshold to be named a climb. What makes this course hard is therefore never the terrain, only your own choice of pace.

The character of the race comes from its setting. It is run on a Saturday in May in the late afternoon, and at 17:10 the ten kilometres are the last start of the day, shared with the walkers and Nordic walkers who line up behind the running field. Bands, drummers and spectators fill the park paths, and in 2026 more than 12,500 women and girls took part. The Berliner Frauenlauf calls itself Germany's largest charity women's run: one euro per entry goes to the hardship fund of the Berliner Krebsgesellschaft, and age-group winners from AK40 upwards receive a free entry for the following year.

Pacing Strategy

On a course without a single climb nothing in the terrain ever slows you down, and that is exactly the trap. Over 60 percent of the loop is level and the rest rises and falls so little that you will not feel the difference at race pace. Plan one split for the whole distance and deliberately keep the opening kilometre no faster than that split, however hard the field pulls out of the start arch.

The race is decided in the middle third, between kilometres four and seven, where the early freshness is gone and the finish is not yet within reach. On wide park paths with few landmarks there is nothing to give you a sense of progress, and once the rhythm slips there is no gradient to hand it back to you. Check your kilometre splits deliberately through this stretch.

Then there is the start time. A 17:10 gun on a May evening means running in the residual heat of the day, though the shaded Tiergarten is noticeably milder than open road. Use the water points, but do not build your race around them: ten kilometres is short enough to run straight past if in doubt.

Training plan for VITAMIN WELL Frauenlauf Berlin: 12-week build

Ten kilometres take most participants between 45 and 75 minutes, which puts the effort around the anaerobic threshold and slightly above it for ambitious runners. The Tiergarten course changes nothing about that baseline demand: there is no climb to force you to redistribute effort and no descent to hand any of it back. The load is uniform from the first minute to the last.

That is precisely why speed endurance over the full distance is the decisive quality. What decides your race is not any one section but whether you can still hold the pace of the first three kilometres over the last three. On a flat loop with nothing to set the rhythm you have to supply it yourself, which makes a trained sense of pace worth as much here as aerobic base.

Build your preparation around threshold and interval work: repeats of 1,000 to 2,000 metres at race pace with short jog recoveries, tempo runs of 15 to 25 minutes just under race pace, and long runs with race-pace blocks embedded in them. Add short, genuinely fast running well above race pace so that goal pace feels economical and you still have a finishing kick on the flat run-in.

Two conditions belong in the plan explicitly. A late-afternoon start in May shifts the race into a time of day when almost nobody trains, so put a few key sessions deliberately at 17:00 and rehearse how you eat across the day. And the route is mostly park path rather than road asphalt, which means tempo sessions on firm trail or gravel surfaces pay off directly.
