TotalEnergies Bilbao Night Running Fest: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The TotalEnergies Bilbao Night Running Fest is run after dark: at seven in the evening the half marathon and the 10K set off together from the esplanade in front of the San Mamés stadium, and the finish is at the Guggenheim Museum. Twenty-one kilometres through a floodlit Bilbao, lined with fireworks and live performances – on a profile flatter than the city's reputation suggests.
Course & Elevation
The course is a pure city loop along the floor of the Nervión valley. From San Mamés it runs first past the Euskalduna palace, then along the Gran Vía into the centre, on to the Teatro Arriaga and the old town, past the city hall, the Isozaki towers and over the Calatrava footbridge before the finish arch at the Guggenheim.
The profile contradicts the city's reputation: the whole route sits in an elevation band between zero and 37 metres. Around 40 per cent of it is flat, the rest rises or falls gently, and the only two classified climbs are 430 and 450 metres long at just under five per cent – barely more than bridge ramps. What remains is a continuous gentle undulation that never quite leaves you alone.
The hour gives it its character. A seven o'clock start in mid-October means practically the whole race is run in the dark, on fully closed roads, with fireworks and stages along the route. The distance is RFEA-approved; the event's other race, the 10K Pirate, shares its first nine kilometres with the half. A marathon is explicitly no longer on the programme – for 2026 the organiser lists only 21K and 10K.
Pacing Strategy
An evening race demands a different day plan rather than a different pacing plan. By seven in the evening you have a whole day behind you, and the commonest mistake is not the opening pace but a fuelling strategy designed for a morning start. Put your last substantial meal three to four hours beforehand and expect your body to need convincing about the unfamiliar hour.
On the course itself the trap is the shared start. The half and the 10K set off together, and because many 10K runners take the opening kilometres considerably harder, you will be running in a field that is faster than your race pace. Run the first two kilometres deliberately to your watch, not to the people around you.
The race is decided in the final third, once the field splits after kilometre nine. The road empties noticeably then, and the constant gentle undulation – 29 per cent rising, 31 per cent falling, hardly any genuinely level ground – has to be ridden actively rather than carried by a group. Watch the surface too: in the dark and in damp October air, Bilbao's old-town flagstones and the bridge decks are considerably more slippery than they look.
Training plan for TotalEnergies Bilbao Night Running Fest: 12-week build
Expect 1:20 to 2:20 as an age-group runner. The demand is one continuous block at or just below threshold. With around 180 metres of climbing inside a 37-metre band the course is technically flat but never level – on no kilometre does the terrain renew your rhythm for you.
The training emphasis is therefore threshold work: tempo runs of 20 to 40 minutes at goal pace and long runs of 90 to 120 minutes with a brisk final third. Add sessions on gently rolling city terrain rather than the flattest loop available, so the many small counter-rises stop being a disruption on race day.
The most important specific preparation is the hour. For the last four to six weeks move at least one hard session a week to the early evening and run it in the dark, so that fuelling, warming up and orienting yourself under artificial light are not new on race day. Train only in the morning and you will race on a completely different body clock.
On conditions: mid-October in Bilbao is mild but often damp, and the course alternates between flagstones, bridge decks and asphalt. Run training kilometres in the wet on hard, smooth ground, and test the shoes you intend to wear before you meet wet stone at night in them for the first time.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
