Media Maratón de Castelló: Course, Route Profile & Map
First run in 1984, the Media Maratón de Castelló is the oldest foot race in the province of Castellón and is held at the end of January on a two-lap city circuit - flat, RFEA-measured, and with a height band of just twenty-five metres. This is a course built for times, not for scenery.
Course & Elevation
The start is at 10:00 in the Parque Ribalta, the city's big nineteenth-century park, with five start corrals seeded by verified times. From there the course runs the same lap twice through Castelló de la Plana and finishes a few hundred metres from the start at the Colegio Gaetà Huguet beside the Paseo Ribalta.
The profile sits between nineteen and forty-five metres above the sea and repeats each lap: a gentle fall of some fifteen metres over the opening kilometres, an equally gentle rise back towards the middle of the lap, and a flat run-out. Over the full distance that is 120 metres, spread across undulations of a few metres each; a good half of the course is flat and there is no steep section anywhere.
2027 is the forty-second edition, put on since the first by the Unió Atlètica Castelló. The course is homologated at 21,097.50 m, every kilometre is signed, and there are four aid stations at five, ten and fifteen kilometres and at the finish, plus a dedicated gel station at kilometre ten. The minimum age is eighteen; the 2026 edition set a participation record.
Pacing Strategy
A two-lap course is a gift for pacing, because the second lap is the same as the first - which is exactly why the first lap is the only place you can get it wrong. Run it in a way you would back yourself to repeat, and accept that it will feel too slow.
That applies here above all to the first two kilometres. The course falls slightly away from the Parque Ribalta, the field is corralled by time and therefore uniformly quick, and the January morning is cool enough to make everything feel easy. That combination produces a fast opening almost reliably, and it comes back on the second lap at exactly the same spot.
The race is decided on the second pass of the rise back, around kilometres sixteen to eighteen. It is fifteen metres that do not exist on fresh legs and very much do after sixteen kilometres. Run the first lap honestly and you can hold pace there and still lift over the flat run-in to the Paseo Ribalta.
Training plan for Media Maratón de Castelló: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the Media Maratón de Castelló is a 1:10 to 2:30 effort. Physiologically it is a sustained near-threshold one with no terrain demand: no steep section, no technical surface, and a profile that gives the effort no external structure.
The training emphasis is therefore standard threshold work - intervals of six to twelve minutes just inside race effort, tempo runs of 25 to 45 minutes - plus at least one test run of 15 to 18 kilometres at intended race pace. This course needs no hill training.
Specific to a two-lap course, one session is worth building around that structure: two equal blocks at identical target race pace, with the second explicitly not allowed to slow. If you usually train on point-to-point routes you will underestimate how much mental work repeating a known lap costs when the second time round hurts.
Conditions are a late-January Sunday morning on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: cool at the start, mild in the race, usually dry, and with a 10:00 start that means a decent wait in the corrals. For runners from central Europe that is unusually good January racing weather - the preparation, though, happens in winter, which realistically puts part of the speed work on a track or a treadmill.
