Blankhult, the 21 km course of the Blue Mountain Trail Run, takes in everything Kilsbergen offers: forest roads and technical stretches of roots and rock, two drops to around 110 metres, and the long climb to Sånnabodahöjden before the finish at First Camp Ånnaboda. What decides your day is how much you still have for the last two and a half kilometres.
The first seven kilometres roll: short rises of rarely more than 40 metres come one after another, and the first water and first-aid point is at 4.4 km. From 7.65 km comes the steepest stretch of the course, a little over 600 metres averaging ten percent. It takes you to the high point at 282 metres. A long descent follows, and between the second aid point at 10 km and kilometre 14 the course gives up around 150 metres.
The second half alternates between climbing back out and dropping again. From 14.4 km the trail rises for almost a kilometre, then after the third aid point at 16.5 km it falls to the lowest point of the loop, just above 100 metres. That is where the final climb starts at 18.1 km: two and a half kilometres and roughly 160 metres of ascent, with a few steep steps, up to Sånnabodahöjden just before the finish.
Kilsbergen rises out of the Närke plain, and the loop follows sections of the Bergslagsleden and the mountain bike trails around Ånnaboda. Underfoot, wide forest roads alternate with narrow forest paths, roots and rock, with boardwalks over streams and views across the lakes. The organiser, Garphyttans idrottsförening, explicitly recommends trail shoes.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first half tempts you into a quick start because the rises up to kilometre 7 are short. Run them at race effort and you pay for it an hour later. Keep your breathing calm on them, and power-hike the steep ramp from 7.65 km as soon as running it would push you over threshold.
The race is decided over the last three kilometres, when the climb to Sånnabodahöjden meets legs that have already absorbed two long descents. That is the trap: the stretches after 10 km and after 16.5 km invite you to let go, but roots and rock demand attention, and every hard braking step costs your quads. Descend loose and controlled, and plan the finish as a mix of running and strong hiking.
The three aid points split the loop into sections of four to six kilometres. Drink at each one even when you feel good, because after 16.5 km there is nothing until the finish, right before the longest climb.

For most recreational runners Blankhult takes between two and a little over three hours. The effort is mainly aerobic but restless: over a tenth of the course is steep uphill, almost as much steep downhill, and there is hardly a long stretch where you settle into one rhythm.
The key section is the climb from 18.1 km, which arrives after more than two hours of work. So build long runs that finish uphill, for example ninety minutes of rolling terrain followed by 15 to 20 minutes of sustained climbing, alternating running with brisk hiking. That teaches you what pace you can still hold on a hill once your legs are no longer fresh.
Roots, rock and boardwalks make the surface the real task on the descents. Run regularly on narrow, technical forest paths so that sure footing is not something you first need on race day, and build eccentric strength: controlled downhill running, lunges and step-downs protect your quads for the finish.
In the weeks before the race, do one rehearsal for the full duration in trail shoes, with exactly the food and drink you plan to use. Because the last aid point is at 16.5 km, practise taking in energy shortly before a long climb as well.
