Brechfa Trail Races.

The half marathon at the Brechfa Trail Races is a single lap of forestry tracks through Glyn Cothi forest in Wales, with around 500 metres of climbing. Two places define it: the long climb right at the beginning and the ramp just before the finish, which takes back what the opening downhill gave you. Your preparation has to aim at both.

Brechfa Trail Races 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The lap opens downhill, dropping almost 40 metres in the first kilometre before a short flat stretch. At kilometre 2 the longest climb of the day begins: a little over three and a half kilometres at around five percent on average, lifting you from about 150 to more than 330 metres. Between kilometres 5 and 10 you stay up there, and the course only undulates gently.

The second half is more restless. From kilometre 10 the route loses over 100 metres in two kilometres, and just before kilometre 14 comes the second real climb: one kilometre at nearly eight percent, which carries on more gently to kilometre 15.5. From there it heads down, interrupted by a short steep kick at kilometre 17.5, to the lowest point of the lap at kilometre 19. The last ramp, about 650 metres at just over seven percent, sits right before the finish.

The event is based at Keepers Car Park in Brechfa Forest. The lap follows a Natural Resources Wales trail past quiet pine stands, deciduous woods, waterfalls and open panoramic views. It is fully marked and easier going than the technical sections of Ridge Runners' longer races. Marshals, medical support and aid stations with water and snacks are out on course, and you will have company: the marathon runners set off an hour ahead of you on the same lap, which they cover twice.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Brechfa Trail Races.

Start

Start under control

Let the opening downhill roll without trying to bank time from it, because from kilometre 2 only your climbing counts. On the first climb pick an effort you can hold for the whole three and a half kilometres, and take a short walk on the steepest pitches rather than overreach. Your best pace belongs on the forestry tracks up high, through kilometre 10: the ground carries you there, and you gain more time than on any ramp.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided between kilometres 14 and 16. This climb arrives after the long descent has already worked your quads, and it is steeper than the first. If you can still run it smoothly, you will be passing people all the way home.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap comes straight after. The downhill to kilometre 19 invites you to let go, yet the closing ramp is right behind it, and on battered legs it turns into a walk. Hold a little back on that last descent. Do not get pulled along by marathon runners you meet out there either: their sums are different from yours.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Brechfa Trail Races: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners are out for roughly 2:15 to 3:15 hours. A little over 40 percent of the distance climbs and slightly more descends, so this is no steady tempo run: long aerobic stretches alternate with climbs that push you past comfortable, and only the section between kilometres 5 and 10 allows a settled rhythm.

Core

Train race pace

Two demands decide your day. Early on you need climbing endurance for an ascent of 20 minutes or more; late on you need the strength to climb steeply again after a lot of downhill running. The second is the rarer ability, and it is what the closing phase from kilometre 14 tests.

Specific

Rehearse the course

So make your long runs hilly and put the climbing deliberately in their second half. A strong key session for the final weeks is a long run that ends with a brisk downhill, followed by a few repeats on a short steep slope. Add hill intervals of three to five minutes for the long climb. Quad strength work and regular downhill running prepare your legs for the switch between the two.

Race week

Arrive fresh

A mid-March date puts your longest runs in January and February, so schedule them early. Spend as much time as you can on forestry tracks, since that pace on that surface carries your race and technical trail practice matters little here. Use the long runs to test what you can eat on the move: the aid stations offer water and snacks.
