The 30 km Börzsöny Expressz is the long loop out of the forest leisure park in Diósjenő and through the Börzsöny hills, almost entirely on forest service roads. The hardest climb of the day comes straight after the start; after that it turns into a long rolling endurance run in which spreading your effort matters more than any single hill.
The loop starts and finishes at the forest leisure park in Diósjenő. The road tilts upward almost as soon as you cross the line: just over two and a half kilometres at close to seven percent on average, with ramps touching 15 percent. That opening block accounts for a large share of the course's total climbing.
After it, the run changes character. Through the middle twenty kilometres short rises and drops alternate, flat running makes up less than a fifth of the distance, and genuinely steep ground is rare. At km 25.75 a last, gentle climb of about one and a half kilometres at roughly three and a half percent waits, and on tired legs it feels longer than it is. From there the course returns to the finish where it began.
Underfoot it is forest service road through the Börzsöny woods almost all the way, wide and runnable rather than technical singletrack. Water stations sit at about km 7, 15 and 23, the route is marked and timing is by chip.
| Start | Length | Ø | Max. | Gain | Cat. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| km 0.1 | 2.7 km | 6.7 % | 14.7 % | +179 m | Cat. 3 |
| km 25.8 | 1.5 km | 3.5 % | 8.5 % | +53 m | — |
Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first climb is also the biggest trap. Run it on start-line adrenaline and you will pay for it from km 15 on. Power-hike the steepest ramps and crest it feeling as if you have only just warmed up; over 30 km, whatever you gain on that hill you give back twice later.
The race is decided in the rolling middle section. A steady rhythm is what counts there: ease off slightly on the short rises, let the descents flow without braking hard or forcing the pace. The water stations, roughly eight kilometres apart, give you fixed points to drink and eat before thirst arrives.
Keep something back for the climb from km 25.75. It is gentle enough to run all the way if you have not overspent earlier, and long enough to cost you a lot of time if you have.

For many recreational runners the loop takes somewhere between two and a half and four hours. The effort is mostly steady and aerobic, broken up by frequent short changes of pace on the rolling ground and one hard block right at the start.
The defining sections are the long climb after the start and the late, gentle one shortly before the finish. Practise taking a hill under control with a mix of running and hiking, then dropping straight back into your running rhythm. Just as important is being able to run up a moderate gradient after two and a half hours on your feet.
Your key session is the long run over hilly ground, built up towards race duration and ideally on forest roads like the ones in the Börzsöny. In some of those runs, put a deliberately easy climb at the start and a steady one at the end, so the race's sequence becomes familiar.
With water stations roughly eight kilometres apart, use your long runs to rehearse drinking and fuelling at that interval, and decide whether you want to carry something of your own for the stretches between them.
