The short course of the Columbia Sunset Trail is essentially one mountain: a long, at times very steep climb out of Kosd, then an equally long way back down. It runs on a Friday evening in June with a headlamp and a phone on the mandatory list, so preparation is about that single ascent and the descent in fading light.
Start and finish are on Bocskai utca in Kosd, and the loop wastes no time. After less than a kilometre of warm-up running the climb begins, and it packs almost the whole evening's elevation gain into about four kilometres. It steepens as it goes: moderate up to km 2.8, then the hard pitches, with sections above 30 percent just before the high point a little past km 4.6. A fifth of the course is steep uphill, and as much again is steep downhill.
A short, steep drop brings you to the only refreshment point at km 5.9. A last small rise follows straight away, and from there the loop is almost all downhill, a little over five kilometres back to the level of the start in Kosd.
What sets it apart is the hour. The race is staged as an evening run into sunset, and since the organiser requires a headlamp and a working phone, expect to run some or all of the descent by lamplight. With no more than 110 places the field stays small.
| Start | Length | Ø | Max. | Gain | Cat. |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| km 0.8 | 4 km | 12.4 % | 30.8 % | +496 m | Cat. 2 |
| km 5.9 | 0.4 km | 5.1 % | 10.1 % | +18 m | — |
Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
The first two kilometres of the climb are where this race is lost. They feel runnable, and anyone who holds valley-floor pace there reaches the steep ramps below the top with nothing left. Plan the ascent from the top down: power-hike the pitches above 20 percent, hands on thighs, and save the running for the easier stretches in between.
The top does not end the race, it changes it. The refreshment point at km 5.9 is the moment to sort out your lamp and your drinking before the long descent starts.
The five-plus kilometres down to Kosd can win you a lot of time and cost you more: tired legs going too fast in half-light is how people fall. Run the descent at a speed where you can still place each step cleanly inside the beam.

Most recreational runners will be out for roughly an hour and a quarter to two hours. The effort comes in two halves: first a long, steadily hard climb that keeps heart rate and breathing high for a long time, then a descent that asks little of your lungs but loads your quads heavily in eccentric work.
The climb is mostly about strength endurance on steep ground. Build in hill blocks of ten to twenty minutes at a time on the steepest slope you can find, and practise switching deliberately between running and fast hiking. Training only on flat ground will not get you up pitches above 20 percent efficiently.
Downhill running matters just as much. In the weeks before the race, schedule longer descents regularly, ideally at the end of a session when your legs are already tired, because that is exactly when the race's descent arrives. Strength work for quads and hips helps you get through the five-plus kilometres downhill without fading.
Since a headlamp and phone are mandatory, include at least one run off-road with your lamp. Use it to find out how bright the lamp needs to be, how it sits when you run downhill, and how well you read the ground and steps inside the beam.
