Breakneck Point Trail Runs.

The half marathon at the Breakneck Point Trail Runs is longer and far steeper than its name suggests: a little over 23 kilometres and nearly 1,200 metres of climbing on a loop from University Settlement Camp in Beacon, New York. Prepare for a steep day on trails, not for a half marathon time.

Breakneck Point Trail Runs 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Start and finish are at University Settlement Camp, and the marathon field is already out on course when the half gets under way. Two climbs lift you to a first high point of around 360 metres by kilometre 3.5. The course then drops again before the steepest ramp of the day arrives at kilometre 7: just over a kilometre averaging more than 20 percent.

The middle of the loop belongs to Cold Spring. Shortly after kilometre 11 you reach the low point almost at sea level, the aid station is there too, and the longest climb follows straight on: about 320 metres of gain in a little over two kilometres. Another ascent from kilometre 16 takes you back up to roughly 340 metres. The final three and a half kilometres then run almost entirely downhill to the camp.

The loop links jeep trails, single-track and the paths of a historic estate, with technical pitches in between. Level ground is the exception: more than half the distance is steep, either up or down. You rarely hold a running rhythm for longer than a few minutes, and that is what separates this loop from an ordinary half marathon off road.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Breakneck Point Trail Runs.

Start

Start under control

Run this loop on effort, not on the watch: only about five percent of the course is flat, so kilometre splits tell you little. The two climbs after the start stay runnable at a little over nine percent, and that is the first trap. Run them fresh and you arrive with heavy legs at the ramp at kilometre 7, which nearly everyone walks anyway. Switch to a hike sooner than feels necessary.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided at kilometre 11.5. From the low point the trail rises at almost 15 percent on average, and those two kilometres are an even, rhythmic march rather than a fight. Top out with something left and you gain far more afterwards than anyone who forced a few running steps on the slope.

Finish

Spend what is left

Use Cold Spring deliberately: the next aid station is only just before the finish, so you run the second half on what you take from there. On the long final descent, sure footing then counts for more than speed, because tired legs forgive little on technical ground.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Breakneck Point Trail Runs: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect around three and a half to five hours, closer to the duration of a flat marathon than a half. The effort alternates constantly: hard uphill phases in the upper aerobic range, then descents that relieve the heart but hit the quads hard. Base endurance carries you through the day, but your legs decide how you finish it.

Core

Train race pace

Your most important building block is steep hiking. Schedule one session a week with climbs of ten to 25 minutes on gradients of 15 percent or more, and practise a strong, even march there rather than short bursts of running. The long climb out of the low point of the loop is exactly this effort with eleven kilometres already in your legs, so place these sessions at the end of longer runs.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Downhill needs two things. Strength work such as lunges and slow step-downs prepares your quads for the many steep descents, and regular runs on technical single-track train your eyes and footwork. Both pay off most over the last kilometres, when concentration fades.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The race falls on 8 May, so your longest runs land in March and April. Do them on trails rather than roads and build towards the full demand: a dress rehearsal of about 20 kilometres and 1,000 metres of climbing shows you what your body will take here. Carry your own fluids and food on it, because two or more hours between aid stations are normal on this course.
