Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs.

The 23K is the one course at the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs that stays below 2,100 metres: one long climb above Carson City, then back down the same way. Nearly all of it can be run, and that is exactly what makes the day harder than the distance suggests.

Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Things get going at Western Nevada College in Carson City at just under 1,500 metres, and the direction is settled from the first step. Two short climbs take you to about 1,700 metres by kilometre 4, and after a brief easing the heart of the course begins. For a little over seven kilometres the trail rises steadily at around five percent, rarely any steeper. After a little over eleven kilometres you reach the turnaround at about 2,050 metres.

The running is on single-track and dirt roads through the alpine and sub-alpine forest of the Carson Spur in the Sierra Nevada. Of the weekend's courses, the 23K sees only the lower part of this terrain: where the ultra distances turn off and head steeply for the heights, it keeps to the gentler line.

The way back returns every metre of height. For about twelve kilometres the course falls with no long rises, levelling briefly only around kilometre 19 before the last drop to the college. Because you run back on the same trail, you already know each stretch from the other direction and how much of it remains.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs.

Start

Start under control

Steep sections that force you to walk hardly exist here, so the built-in brake of longer mountain races is missing. You have to limit the pace yourself. The two short climbs before kilometre 4 are the test: if your breathing stays calm there, the start is right.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is decided on the seven kilometres before the turnaround. Five percent feels harmless for the first quarter of an hour, yet it becomes the longest effort of the day, in ever thinner air. Choose a rhythm you can hold to the very top without walking breaks, and go by your breathing rather than your watch: above 1,800 metres the same pace costs more than it did down at the college.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits just past the turnaround. The slope is gentle enough to simply let go, but opening up on the first kilometres down leaves you with heavy thighs for the final stretch. Stay controlled on short steps and only release once you are past the level section around kilometre 19.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect about 2:45 to 4:30 hours. The effort is aerobic throughout, with no hard spikes: one long, even phase uphill, then a second one that asks less of your heart and lungs than of your muscles.

Core

Train race pace

Your key session copies the climb: 45 to 60 minutes at a stretch in one rhythm uphill, on a moderate grade and running all the way. If you have no hill that long, string together climbs of ten to 15 minutes and run briskly back down between them, because that is part of the race too. A long run with around 600 metres of climbing shows you in advance whether your pace holds to the top.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Twelve kilometres of falling trail load thighs and calves in a way no flat mile does. Over the weeks, work longer downhill sections into your runs, with short steps and a high cadence. Place them at the end of a long session now and then, so you run them on pre-tired legs as you will on the day.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Single-track and dirt roads also demand sure footing at speed, so regular running on uneven ground belongs firmly in the plan. Altitude plays a smaller part in the 23K than in the other distances of this July weekend, though it too goes above 2,000 metres. A stay at altitude is not essential for it, but a more cautious time plan for the climb is.
