Brekeld Runners Trail.

On its shortest course the Brekeld Runners Trail covers ten kilometres of woodland around Rijssen with almost no tarmac underfoot. Climbing barely registers; holding a fast pace on sand, forest floor and meadow is the real task. Road runners stepping across will spend their preparation on the soft ground rather than on hills.

Brekeld Runners Trail 2027: Course, Route Profile & Map

The loop rises gently straight after the start and reaches its highest point after little more than a kilometre and a half. From there it falls steadily for several kilometres to its lowest spot around kilometre five, only about 17 metres below the top.

The way back is more restless than the way out. Small undulations follow one another, the last noticeable crest comes just after kilometre eight, and the loop then runs quietly home. Nothing on this distance is steep, and a good half of the course is flat.

The ground sets the character. The organiser describes the routes as 98 percent unpaved: forest paths, heath, sandy ground and meadows in a rolling landscape shaped by history. Orange ribbons and direction signs mark the way, so your eyes can stay on your footing, and even this short loop has its aid station. On paper this is a flat ten; underfoot it stays a trail on which hardly a step springs back the way it does on tarmac.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Brekeld Runners Trail.

Start

Start under control

Treat this as a fast ten, but not by road splits. The first rise comes so early and is so shallow that you hardly notice it in the field. That is exactly why it costs more than it should if you follow other people's pace there before finding your own rhythm on soft ground.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The long fall to kilometre five is where you can gain time for little extra effort. Keep your steps short and quick, because a long reaching stride gets little drive out of sand.

Finish

Spend what is left

The race is settled in the second part, in the undulations between kilometres six and nine. The biggest trap sits at the very end: the 2026 route measured almost ten and a half kilometres. Launch your final sprint when you see the finish, not when your watch says ten.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Brekeld Runners Trail: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Expect roughly 50 to 80 minutes depending on form. For most runners that is an effort close to threshold, aerobic throughout but uncomfortable, with short spikes in the undulations of the second half. Long hill sessions do little for you here, as the rises are too small to shape the day.

Core

Train race pace

What matters more is that your legs know threshold work on yielding ground. Move tempo runs and longer intervals onto forest tracks and, where you can, sandy stretches. Do not compare the times with tarmac; judge them by heart rate and breathing, since the same effort produces a slower pace there.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Sand and meadow also ask for stable ankles and strong calves, because every push-off gives way a little. Short strength and stability work for feet, calves and hips twice a week pays off, as do easy runs on uneven ground that keep your stride short and quick. Decide beforehand whether you will use the aid station, so that it does not cost you rhythm in the race.

Race week

Arrive fresh

In the last weeks before the early October date, add a few sessions whose fastest part comes only after seven or eight kilometres. They teach you to hold rhythm through small undulations and to keep pushing past the ten-kilometre mark, which is exactly where this race ends.
