Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The loop starts and finishes in Hazel Grove and runs on roads, tracks, trails and field paths out into the Peak District hills and back. The climbing is front-loaded: from km 14 the route rises for three and a half kilometres, at km 20 a steeper climb averages more than eleven percent, and between km 29 and 35 two short ramps kick up past 25 percent in their steepest pitches.

After a longer, gentler climb from km 46 the course holds a rolling high line until around km 75, reaching its highest point near km 64. The final 15 kilometres or so drop steadily back to Hazel Grove with no climb worth the name.

The event is run every year by the 3rd Hazel Grove Scout Group as a fundraiser, with the field capped at 400. Registration and kit check happen on Saturday morning, and on the route you have to register at each checkpoint in the set order.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56.

Start

Start under control

With the hard climbs packed between km 14 and 35, early in the afternoon while the legs still feel fresh, the biggest risk here is spending too much too soon. Hike the steep ramps around km 30 and 33 without exception, and only run again once the ground lets you do so without labouring for breath.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The race is not decided on those ramps but in the long rolling middle between km 46 and 75. After a noon start you are out there past dusk by then, and anyone who can still run evenly gains hours while others are reduced to walking.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap is the run-in: the last 15 kilometres slope gently down and invite you to run, but only if your quads survived the many descents before them. More than a third of the course goes downhill, so controlled descending pays from the very first hill.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Bullock Smithy Hike / Ultra 56: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Ultra-runners typically need 12 to 18 hours for this loop, while walkers often use much of the 24-hour window. The effort is mostly long and aerobic, broken up by steep climbs you will hike and many descents that tire the muscles more than the pace does.

Core

Train race pace

What decides the day is whether you reach the rolling middle section still able to run after the climbs of the first 35 kilometres. Build long sessions on hilly ground where you hike the steep pitches briskly and then settle back into an easy running rhythm on the stretches that follow.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Downhill running is the second priority. Regular descents within your long runs condition the quads for the last 15 kilometres, which are only quick if you can still run them.

Race week

Arrive fresh

The noon start in early September means you head into darkness on course. Put some long sessions into the evening and run them with a head torch, practise navigating between checkpoints, and test your food and kit exactly as you will present them at Saturday morning's check.
