Pendle Way in a Day.

Pendle Way in a Day is a waymarked trail challenge through the trails and moorlands of Pendle in the South Pennines, and the 45 miles are its long form. The loop saves its hardest climb until almost the end, so your preparation stands or falls on what your legs can still do after more than 60 kilometres.

Pendle Way in a Day 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

This is a waymarked loop through trails and moorland in early February, bringing you back to its starting height of around 220 metres. The organiser provides a route file for the course but stresses that it is for guidance only, so the waymarks out on the ground keep their importance. The first big climb begins at km 9 and carries you a little over three kilometres up to about 370 metres before dropping away quickly. Between km 17 and 25 comes the quietest stretch of the day, almost level and low-lying.

The second big climb starts at km 27 with just over 160 metres, and from here the course rarely lets up. Until km 50 one shorter rise follows another, each worth less than 100 metres. Just before km 53 you reach the lowest point of the loop at around 100 metres, and a long, even climb pulls away from it.

The finale opens at km 60 with a steep ramp of a little over 110 metres. After a short drop comes the climb this course revolves around, starting at km 63: nearly 300 metres in under three kilometres. It touches 16 percent at its steepest and tops out at just over 500 metres. What remains is descent, back to where the day began.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Pendle Way in a Day.

Start

Start under control

Only about a seventh of this loop is truly flat; the rest climbs or falls. That makes kilometre splits a poor yardstick here. Run the day on effort, walk the steep pitches early and without guilt, and use the level stretch from km 17 to settle and eat rather than to bank time.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The last two climbs from km 60 are what counts. Together they add a little over 400 metres, around a quarter of the total ascent, and they arrive when everything before them is already in your legs. Plan to reach the foot of the first ramp with enough left to keep moving, because the long steep climb demands a strong, purposeful hike, and stalling there costs more than on any other section.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits just before it. The climb out of the low point at km 53 runs at around four percent, comfortably runnable, and after the long stretch of rises it tempts you into one more push. Hold back there. Every minute won on that gentle slope gets paid back twice on the steep one.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Base

Build the base

Age-group athletes should expect roughly nine to thirteen hours for the 45 miles. This is above all a long aerobic effort that keeps switching between running and walking, because the loop offers few long uniform sections. Top-end speed hardly matters; the ability to break back into a run hour after hour matters most.

Core

Train race pace

The heart of your preparation is long runs with the climbing at the end. Put the steepest ground of your longest sessions into their final two hours so you rehearse this course's finale on tired legs: a ramp, a brief respite, then a climb of nearly three kilometres. Add hiking intervals on steep ground, since a climb reaching 16 percent is a walking job for most runners.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Do not forget the way down. Around 300 metres of descent to the finish arrive after your quads have worked all day, and across the whole loop nearly four kilometres in ten run downhill. Regular downhill running, including at the end of longer sessions, keeps this part manageable.

Race week

Arrive fresh

An early February date puts your longest runs in December and January. Use them to test shoes, clothing and food for a full day out, and train on trails rather than tarmac wherever you can. Practise following a waymarked path as well, with the route on your watch only as a backup, because that is how this course is meant to work.
