Course & Elevation
The day starts on the Esplanade in Almere Stad, next to the Kunstlinie theatre: two anticlockwise laps in the Weerwater, then the exit into the first transition in the Lumièrepark. From there the bike course runs along the water and through the woods of Almere Haven onto the dike, and out into two identical loops across dike and polder. T2 sits in the Lumièrepark again, and the marathon circles the very lake the day began in, finishing on the Esplanade.
That compression into a single place shapes the race. Almere stands on drained sea floor, the whole event takes place below sea level, and the Weerwater is the lake in the middle of the city. Swim start, both transitions and the finish lie a few hundred metres apart, and the water you swam your laps in during the morning is beside you again in the afternoon.
The distribution of work is unambiguous. The swim is the shortest part of the day and changes little; the bike loop is by far the largest block; and because the long distance sets off early in the morning, the end of the marathon falls into dusk and into darkness for many. Save nothing for the evening and it will feel very long.
Pacing Strategy
Managing the whole day matters more on this course than any single discipline. The two laps in the Weerwater cost you the smallest share of the day and can still ruin it if you swim the opening minutes above your rhythm. Leave the water in a state where the first hour on the bike feels calm.
The long distance is decided between the second bike loop and the first ten kilometres of the run. Until the end of lap one almost any power number feels sustainable; what you overspend there does not show up on the bike but shortly after T2. Plan the second loop as the slower one from the outset, and treat every acceleration on it as credit you repay in the evening.
The most common trap is the transitions themselves. Both sit in the Lumièrepark, and the twenty seconds you save there are worthless against a missed drink or clothing you failed to adjust. Use T1 and T2 as deliberate moments to sort out fuelling and kit for the hours ahead.

The polder is open country, the wind shifts across a September day, and race day runs into darkness: fuelling and drinking across many hours, handling falling temperatures in the evening, and training in unpleasant weather are part of the preparation here, not extras.
