Course & Elevation

The first kilometre and a half is the opposite of everything that follows. From the Straßenmeisterei on the B130 you roll along the Danube at roughly 283 metres above sea level with practically no gradient. That stretch is too short to replace a warm-up and long enough that an opening pace which is far too high still feels completely unremarkable.

At kilometre 1.4 the real climb starts: 4.5 kilometres averaging 6.2 percent for 280 metres of gain. The average hides how unevenly that gradient is spread, because individual ramps touch more than 20 percent. Across the whole course just under 50 percent of the distance is uphill and another 20 percent or so is steeply uphill, leaving only about 17 percent flat.

After that the climbing does not stop, it only eases. From kilometre 6.9 there are 1.9 kilometres at 4.7 percent, and from kilometre 9 another kilometre at 6.5 percent up to the parish church in Stadl at around 725 metres. Because short dips sit between the climbs, the course adds up to 480 metres of ascent while the finish is a net 435 metres above the start. The Bergsprint is run as a cycling tourism event on open roads, so normal traffic rules apply rather than the racing line.

Pacing Strategy

A 10-kilometre hill climb is one continuous hard ascent. Only around 17 percent of the course is flat and there is no descent worth the name, so there is nowhere to make up for an opening effort that was too high. You pay for it in the final kilometre, which stands up at 6.5 percent one last time: fading there costs more than was ever available to gain down at the river.

The race hinges on the long climb from kilometre 1.4 and on what still follows it. After those 280 metres come two more ascents, and the last one stands at 6.5 percent immediately before the line, exactly where your legs have the least left.

In training, anything that mirrors this structure pays off. Intervals of 8 to 20 minutes at threshold, ridden on a real gradient rather than on the flat, match both the duration and the cadence of the race. Add short 30 to 60 second efforts inside those intervals so that ramps beyond 20 percent do not break your rhythm.

Two details are specific to this course. First, gearing: on gradients around 20 percent you want a ratio that still lets you stay seated at a workable cadence, and that is better tested in training than on race day. Second, the evening start, which after a full working day calls for its own warm-up routine and for fuelling spread across the day. Ride at least one hard session at the same time of day rather than finding out how it feels for the first time in the race.
