Course & Elevation
The start sits in Guggenthal at around 617 metres, the finish on the Gaisberg summit at 1,265 metres. The road tilts up immediately: the first 1.25 kilometres average 6.9 per cent and take 86 metres out of you before anything else happens. A short easing then follows, and it is the only place on the course where the heart rate can settle at all.
From kilometre 2.6 the real ascent up the Gaisbergstraße begins: 6.2 kilometres at an average of 8.7 per cent for 543 metres of gain, with ramps up to 17.5 per cent in the tight hairpins. More than 42 per cent of the route sits in the steep-uphill band and barely 5 per cent is flat.
The road is tarmac throughout and wide enough to get out of the saddle comfortably. It is ridden as an individual time trial in a small field, so there is no shelter to be had; everyone rides their own race to the top.
Pacing Strategy
A hillclimb of this length is decided over roughly 25 to 40 minutes, which puts it just above threshold for well-trained riders and right at threshold for everyone else. The allocation is simple but unforgiving: the opening 1.25 kilometres already cost matches, yet they are not the race. Anyone who goes into the red there pays for it twice from kilometre 2.6 on.
The race is decided on the long ramp to the summit. Six kilometres at 8.7 per cent reward constant power, not constant speed: hold the wattage, let the speed vary. The hairpins at up to 17.5 per cent are the classic mistake: power spikes there, and the strength is then missing for the two kilometres still to come.
The biggest trap is an impatient start. Because the road pitches up straight away and there is nobody ahead to measure yourself against, the opening pace is almost always too high. The final two kilometres are where the time is actually won.
Training plan for Gaisberg Vertical: 12-week build
For an age-group rider the effort lasts roughly 30 to 45 minutes, one continuous, high-intensity block with no recovery built in. In character it is a threshold race: what matters is not surviving accelerations but holding a high output for half an hour straight, at cadences well below what the same rider uses on the flat.
The decisive phase is the last four kilometres of the main ramp. That is where output either stays level or starts collapsing in waves, and the steep hairpins additionally demand absorbing short overloads without losing rhythm.
Preparation should therefore centre on long threshold intervals on a climb: 2 to 3 times 12 to 20 minutes on a 7 to 9 per cent gradient, ridden to power rather than to feel. Low-cadence strength-endurance work supports the steep sections, and one or two full test runs on the actual road calibrate the pacing plan against the real length of the climb.
Because the race starts at three in the afternoon in August, at least part of the hard work belongs in afternoon heat. Gearing deserves the same testing: discovering on race day that the smallest gear is too big for a 17 per cent ramp costs more time than any training detail can win back.
