SYNLAB Como Lake Half Marathon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The SYNLAB Como Lake Half Marathon runs the old lakeshore road of Lake Como, the Vecchia Regina, from Villa Olmo out to Laglio and back. The organizer calls the course undulating, and the profile agrees: 259 metres of climbing over 21 kilometres and only a third of it genuinely flat.
Course & Elevation
Start and finish are at 08:30 at Villa Olmo, the neoclassical lakeside villa on the northern edge of Como. The course follows the SP71, the historic Vecchia Regina, the old at-grade shore road, rather than the newer SS340 with its bored tunnels that runs parallel to it.
Through Cernobbio and past Villa Erba it heads north along the western shore, on through Moltrasio and Carate Urio to a turnaround about six hundred metres beyond the centre of Laglio. The way back uses the same road, so you meet every ramp twice: once climbing on the way out, once descending on the way home, and the other way round.
That is what defines the course. The lake sits at about 199 metres, and the most pronounced climb, in the stretch between Villa Erba and Moltrasio, rises to a good 265 metres, at kilometre 4.3 to 4.8 outbound and 16.3 to 16.8 on the return. In total the course carries five categorised climbs, the hardest at kilometre 15.6 averaging 7.4 percent with pitches above twelve. The field is capped at 1,300, entries close on 26 November, and 2026 is the 14th edition.
Pacing Strategy
A half marathon with 259 metres of climbing is not a race for times, and the out-and-back shape still makes planning simple: what you climb on the way out you descend on the way back. Plan even effort rather than even splits and expect your splits to swing by twenty seconds and more.
The race is decided on the climb between Villa Erba and Moltrasio, which arrives first between kilometre four and five. It is the most pronounced of the day and it lands exactly where on a flat course you would be settling into race rhythm. Take it at the same effort as the flat and let the pace go; the return leg gives it back.
The trap is the climb at kilometre 15.6. Averaging 7.4 percent with pitches above twelve, it is the steepest of the day, and it comes once you already have fifteen undulating kilometres in your legs. Deliberately save something for it, run it short and quick, and use the closing kilometres back to Villa Olmo actively downhill rather than braking. In early December the shore road often sits damp in the shade of the slopes, so watch the surface as you do.
Training plan for SYNLAB Como Lake Half Marathon: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the Como Lake Half Marathon takes between an hour and a half and two and a half hours. The demand is rolling and aerobic with a real strength component: 259 metres of ascent over 21 kilometres, only 35 percent flat terrain and five categorised climbs mean pure threshold work on a flat loop is not enough here.
So move a large part of your tempo work onto gradient: intervals of two to five minutes at four to seven percent, run in sets, reproduce this shore road's run of climbs well. Add a weekly long run of 90 to 120 minutes over undulating ground.
The second emphasis is downhill running. On an out-and-back every climb is necessarily followed by a descent, ten times in all, and the eccentric load accumulates over 21 kilometres. Practise fast, relaxed descents of 500 to 1,500 metres and add strength work for the quads and trunk.
On conditions: early December on Lake Como is cold, the 08:30 start sits in the shade of the steep western slopes, and the road can be damp or slick in places. Plan layers you can shed, choose shoes with grip rather than pure racing soles, and expect the sun to clear the slopes only late in the race.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
