Diez Vista.

Now in its 29th year, Diez Vista is 50 kilometres of west-coast rainforest, circling through the trails around Buntzen Lake and back to White Pine Beach. Prepare for roots, rocks and mud, for two mountain blocks split by a long rolling middle, and for one steep ramp that waits until very late in the day.

Diez Vista 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Two flat kilometres, then the first mountain begins. The trail climbs steadily for a little over three kilometres, and at kilometre 6 comes the hardest stretch of the day: almost 250 metres of gain in under 1.3 kilometres, with pitches where nobody in the field keeps running. Roughly here, at DV Saddle, is the race's only water-only stop. After the high point at around 560 metres the course drops more than 400 metres in one go by kilometre 12.

Then the race changes character. From Buntzen North near kilometre 13 through Buntzen South near kilometre 20 to the Equestrian Lot the course stays low and rolling, alternating west-coast rainforest trail with gravel service road, and you can run again. Runnable does not mean smooth here: roots, rocks and mud stay with you all day.

From kilometre 28 the route climbs in two steps back above 450 metres, with Eagle Mountain Road between them, then falls away for a long time. Around kilometre 41 comes the final test: 200 metres of gain at an average of 14 percent, before the last drop to the finish at White Pine Beach. The organiser puts the loop at about 2,000 metres of climbing.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Diez Vista.

Start

Start under control

About a third of this course is steep, split almost evenly between up and down. Your pace therefore comes less from a target number than from deciding where you walk. Anyone who still wants legs at kilometre 41 hikes the ramp at kilometre 6, and the long descent after it should stay controlled too: 400 metres of roots and rocks this early take more out of your quads than the saved minutes are worth.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The trap sits in the middle. Some 15 rolling kilometres do not look like the gap between two mountains, and if you treat them as a chase after the hard opening you reach the Equestrian Lot with nothing left. Hold a pace there at which you can still eat.

Finish

Spend what is left

The race is decided between kilometre 28 and the finish. The second mountain block is less steep than the first, but it arrives after more than 25 kilometres and strings two climbs together. If you can still run the long descent that follows and get up the kilometre 41 ramp without blowing, the final kilometres to the beach are where you pass people.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Diez Vista: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners should expect roughly six to nine hours. The effort is mostly aerobic but far from even: power hiking on steep ground, controlled descending and easy running in turns, with short hard spikes on the ramps. That calls for time on your feet, not just running mileage.

Core

Train race pace

Steep-specific work pays most. Practise hiking fast on slopes above 15 percent, hands on thighs, because that is how the kilometre 6 ramp gets done. Build long runs so the hardest climb sits right at the end: a tough hill session several hours in reproduces exactly what meets you around kilometre 41.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The second pillar is descending on tired legs. This course sheds a lot of height in long stretches over roots and rocks, and your quads decide whether you still run the late descent. Regular downhills on technical ground, plus leg strength work, return more here than extra flat kilometres.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Train on the ground you will race on, ideally rooty forest trail and mud, and use those sessions to judge your shoes' grip. With the race on 10 April, your longest sessions fall in the winter months. Plan your fuelling as well: the first stop is water only, the next point follows near kilometre 13, and eating through the rolling middle belongs in every long run.
