Survival of the Fittest 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Start and finish are at Capilano University in Squamish, and the loop stays on university lands. After a brief drop the first long climb begins inside the opening kilometre and works upward for two and a half kilometres at just over eight percent. Two more follow with hardly a break, and the last of them, from kilometre 4.9, holds the steepest short ramps. At kilometre 7 you reach the high point, just under 600 metres above sea level.

From there the course loses about 300 metres in a little over two and a half kilometres, and the only aid station stands near the end of that descent at kilometre 9. The second half is more broken up: from kilometre 10.8 a stretch of just over a kilometre climbs at almost ten percent, then rolling ground leads to nearly 400 metres. From kilometre 13 the course runs downhill for a long way, and the final two and a half kilometres stay almost flat at start level.

The ground alternates between runnable stretches and technical sections where secure footing is worth more than power. The area's trails go by names like Legacy, Megacy and Hoods in the Woods, and the views reach the Tantalus range. The organiser puts this distance at 900 metres of climbing. A meal and a massage at the finish are part of the race.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Survival of the Fittest 2027.

Start

Start under control

About two thirds of the climbing comes before kilometre 7, and you enter it without a warm-up: the first climb begins before the field has sorted itself out. Take it at a level where you could still run at the top, and hike the steepest ramps on purpose. Racing for position here gets billed over the next four kilometres, because this section offers no real recovery.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The main trap is the descent from kilometre 7. After that much climbing it feels like a reward, but 300 metres of drop in a little over two and a half kilometres goes straight into the quads, and technical ground punishes every misstep. Take speed out of the difficult sections and let go only where the footing allows.

Finish

Spend what is left

The race is decided between kilometres 10 and 13. The ramp at almost ten percent meets legs that have just been braking, and anyone still able to run it gains real time on the rolling stretch behind it and in the nearly flat finish. With aid only at kilometre 9, you drink from your own supply until then.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Survival of the Fittest 2027: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners are out for roughly 2:15 to 3:30 hours. This is no steady run: half the course climbs, two fifths descend and only a small remainder is flat. Your effort swings between long spells just below threshold and short hard ramps, while your legs do completely different work on the way down.

Core

Train race pace

The decisive sections ask for two things in sequence: seven kilometres of climbing without overreaching, then legs that still run after the descent. Build in hill intervals of eight to twelve minutes that alternate running and brisk hiking, so you are at home with both on a slope. There are ramps above 20 percent here, which makes strong hiking something to train, not just something to fall back on.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The top priority is downhill running on technical ground. Plan a weekly run with longer descents, easy at first and quicker later, and now and then add 15 minutes at race pace on the flat afterwards. That rehearses the transition into the final kilometres, where the muscles are already tired from braking.

Race week

Arrive fresh

With the race on 8 May, early in the season, the build-up falls in winter and spring. Start the hill work early rather than leaving it for the last few weeks. If the race serves as a checkpoint for summer, plan recovery afterwards before the next training block begins.
