Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Duatlón Cros Rincón de la Victoria.

Start

Settle into the race

The runs are flat and fast; the bike course is not. That shifts the weight of the race onto the 19.6 km on the bike, and especially onto the moment after the first transition, when the lap climb meets your running legs for the first time. Run the opener on the limit and you pay for it there.

Mid-race

Spread the effort

At the same time there is a case for a quick start: drafting is allowed, and a good group saves energy on the rolling sections. The right split lies in between, fast enough to leave T1 with the right company, controlled enough to ride the climb that follows.

Finish

Finish strong

Three flat kilometres leave limited room to close a gap. Positions are usually visible by T2 already, so a fast second transition is worth more here than at a longer distance.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Duatlón Cros Rincón de la Victoria: 12-week build

Base

Build all three disciplines

As an age-group athlete, expect roughly 1:30 to 2:00 hours, most of it on the bike. The effort stays high throughout: three hard climbs in the middle, framed by two runs with hardly any terrain to hide in.

Core

Brick sessions

The most important session type is the brick in both directions: a run followed directly by a climb on the bike, and a ride followed directly by a fast run.

Specific

Practise transitions

One a week in the final weeks before 22 November is enough if it mirrors the race order. Practise the transitions themselves too.

Race week

Arrive fresh

In a race this short, a few seconds in T1 decide whether you ride in a group or alone, and since drafting is legal, some group rides belong in the build-up.
