Estra Firenze Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Estra Firenze Marathon starts and finishes on Piazza del Duomo, a few metres from Brunelleschi's dome. In between lie 42 flat kilometres through the old city, the Cascine park and along the banks of the Arno: fast on paper, demanding underfoot, because much of the centre is run on old paving.

Course & Elevation

The 08:30 start is on Piazza del Duomo. The course leaves the centre to the northwest past the Fortezza da Basso and, between roughly kilometre 5 and 15, runs through the Parco delle Cascine, the long riverside park with its plane-tree avenues. It is the one continuous green stretch of the race and also its lowest ground.

Back in the city the route follows the lungarni, the embankment roads of the Arno, crosses the historic bridges and passes the athletics stadium. The closing section is what people come to Florence for: Piazza Pitti, Piazza della Signoria, the courtyard of the Uffizi, then the narrow lanes back to the cathedral and the finish on Via dei Pecori.

The profile is flat but not level. The organizer publishes its own elevation checkpoints: 63 metres at the start, 43 to 46 metres between kilometre 10 and 15 in the Cascine, back to 62 metres at kilometre 20, then a drift between 52 and 65 metres to the line. Measured, the 42.4 km course gathers 119 metres of ascent, 87 percent of it counts as flat and there is no categorised climb. What matters instead is the surface: asphalt on the approach roads and in the park, old stone in the historic centre. The field is capped at 13,000 and sold out for 2026; this is the 42nd edition.

Pacing Strategy

On a course without climbs even splits are the plan, but this one asks for two deliberate adjustments. The first concerns the Cascine: between kilometre 5 and 15 the route drops about twenty metres and runs wide, straight avenues. It is the fastest section of the day and precisely for that reason the one where an over-ambitious target time is born. Those twenty metres have to be given back later.

The second adjustment is for the finish. From about kilometre 35 the surface changes more often, the lanes narrow, and corners, kerbs and stone slabs make a long stride impossible through the closing kilometres between the Signoria, the Uffizi and the Duomo. Expect five to ten seconds a kilometre there at unchanged effort, and plan for it rather than fighting it.

The race is decided between kilometre 30 and 38. The organizer's cutoffs, 3:00 at halfway, 4:15 at 30 km and 6:00 overall, are generous, but runners who brush against them almost always did so because of a fast Cascine section. If you are comfortably inside them, use exactly this phase on the lungarni: straight, wide, and the last stretch where pace can be held before the centre makes running technical again.

Training plan for Estra Firenze Marathon: 12-week build

For age-group runners the Estra Firenze Marathon means roughly three and a half to six hours on the road, against a six-hour limit with checks at halfway and at kilometre 30. The demand is continuously aerobic with no anaerobic spikes: 87 percent flat terrain, no categorised climb and 119 metres of ascent across the whole loop.

The course-specific stimulus is the change of surface, not the gradient. Asphalt kilometres in the Cascine and on the lungarni alternate with historic stone in the centre, and the last part of the race sits almost entirely on the rougher of the two. Train regularly on paving and uneven pavements, add foot and calf strengthening, and pick a race shoe that stays stable on undulating stone.

What decides the race is holding pace after kilometre 30, when no gradient is helping any more. Build long runs to 30-35 km and place 8-12 km at marathon race pace at the end of them, ideally on mixed surfaces. Add threshold runs of 12 to 16 kilometres, because on flat terrain threshold performance translates almost directly into finishing time.

On conditions: at the end of November the race starts at 08:30 in a tight valley basin on the Arno. The air is cold in the morning, the wait in the corral is long, and rain is a realistic prospect at that time of year. On wet historic stone both the grip and the sensible stride length change, so plan throwaway layers and try your race shoes at least once on wet paving before committing to them.
