Maratona di Ravenna Città d'Arte: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Maratona di Ravenna Città d'Arte runs past all eight of the city's UNESCO World Heritage sites, from San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia out to Sant'Apollinare in Classe. Forty-two kilometres on the Po plain, about as flat as an Italian marathon gets, on a course that is less a lap of a city than a tour of late-antique Ravenna.

Course & Elevation

All three races start together at 09:15 at the Pala De André on Viale Europa, the arena on the northwestern edge of town. The marathon runs from there into the historic centre and works through the sequence of Byzantine buildings: San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Arian and the Neonian baptisteries, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Archbishop's Chapel of Sant'Andrea and the Mausoleum of Theodoric.

What sets this marathon apart from an ordinary city race lies to the south. Some five kilometres outside the centre stands Sant'Apollinare in Classe, the basilica of the ancient port town of Classe, and the course goes out there deliberately. Only the marathon reaches it; the half and the 10K stay several kilometres short. That is what puts all eight World Heritage sites on a single loop.

The profile is the Po plain's: 163 metres of ascent over the measured 42.2 kilometres, barely four metres per kilometre, no categorised climb and 69 percent flat terrain, with what undulation there is coming from canal bridges and level crossings. Ravenna was the last capital of the Western Roman Empire, and the organizer, the Ravenna Runners Club, carries the theme through to the finisher medal, which is designed as a mosaic.

Pacing Strategy

There is no terrain reason to vary your pace here, so plan even splits or a slightly negative one. That is precisely the difficulty: a course without climbs never forgives a fast start, because nothing forces you to ease off before it is too late.

The race is decided on the run out to Classe. The way out of the centre and back runs on open approach roads with few spectators, little shade and little variety, and it falls in the second half, once your rhythm is already set. Run it evenly and you pass people steadily; force the splits because the profile seems to permit them and you give the time back over the last ten kilometres.

The trap is the openness. There is no natural shelter on the Po plain, and a November morning can push cold wind across the fields, which on the way back from the south may hit you head-on. Judge that section by effort rather than by the watch, find a group for the approach roads, and save the effort for the closing kilometres back into the old town, where the crowds and the setting carry you again.

Training plan for Maratona di Ravenna Città d'Arte: 12-week build

For age-group runners the Maratona di Ravenna means roughly three and a half to six hours on the road. The demand is about as uniform as a marathon can be: continuously aerobic, no categorised climb, barely four metres of ascent per kilometre. There is no section where the terrain forces a break on you or hands you one.

That sets the training emphasis: pace tolerance rather than climbing strength. Build long runs to 30-35 km and place 10-15 km at marathon race pace at the end of them rather than the start, and add threshold runs of 12 to 16 kilometres, because on flat terrain threshold performance translates almost directly into finishing time.

The second half on the open roads to Classe is what decides the race. Train for it with long runs on unsheltered ground, dyke paths, farm roads, waterfronts, where you deliberately work into wind and learn to accept slower splits at unchanged effort. Tolerance for monotony is a genuine requirement here: train only on varied loops and you lose your rhythm on a straight approach road.

On conditions: early November in Romagna is cool to cold, the start is not until 09:15, and the plain offers neither shelter nor shade, with fog over the fields far from unusual at that time of year. Plan throwaway layers and a drinking strategy you will actually follow in the cold, because people under-drink in cool weather and the course gives you no reason to break your rhythm for long stretches. The surface is hard city and country asphalt throughout, so put your key sessions on asphalt too.
