Course & Elevation

The start and finish are in Grasmere. The loop takes Kirkstone Pass at kilometre 19, the high point of the day at 458 metres, then runs past Ullswater and Keswick into the north-west. Honister (km 69), Newlands Hause (km 81) and Whinlatter (km 90) follow in quick succession, three short, steep climbs with double-digit ramps. After a long, rolling passage along the west coast comes the real test at kilometre 149: Hardknott, the steepest road in England at up to 30 per cent, immediately followed by Wrynose at kilometre 156 and the short rise to Blea Tarn. The closing 20 kilometres back to Grasmere are comparatively flat. The route runs on open roads, with cut-off times at the Braithwaite (11:30) and Calder Bridge (14:30) checkpoints.

Pacing Strategy

This course punishes a fast start more than almost any other. Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands and Whinlatter all come in the first half and tempt riders into the red, but the day is decided at kilometre 149. Reach Hardknott with something left and you ride up it; arrive empty and you walk. A gear of at least 34x32 is advisable, ideally 34x34 or lower. The fastest riders come in just under six hours, a solid mid-pack rider in eight to nine, and eleven hours or more is entirely normal. Food is available at three checkpoints, but the gaps are long: carry your own for the west-coast section.

Training plan for Fred Whitton Challenge: 12-week build

Preparation needs two things: volume and short, very steep climbing. Long rides of five to seven hours with 2,000 metres of ascent or more form the base, backed by weekly repeats on gradients of 15 to 25 per cent, two to five minutes each, out of the saddle and ideally on race gearing. Just as important is rehearsing that effort tired: put the steep intervals at the end of a four-hour ride, the way Hardknott comes at the end of the event. Descending technique on narrow, wet roads with cattle grids deserves as much attention as the climbing.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
