The Etape Loch Ness is the biggest closed-road event in British cycling: one lap right around Loch Ness, set off at dawn from Bught Park in Inverness. For fifty kilometres the course pretends to be harmless, and then, at Fort Augustus, comes the timed climb up to Glendoe. Preparing for it means preparing for a long flat approach with one hard blow in it.

Course & Elevation

The course is a genuine loop: it starts in Bught Park on the southern edge of Inverness and finishes a few hundred metres away on Ness Bank in the middle of the city. The first fifty-three kilometres run along the north-western shore through Drumnadrochit and Invermoriston to Fort Augustus. That half sits almost throughout between twenty and fifty metres above sea level, half the total distance falls in the flat gradient band, and the rises within it are short. It is not free, though, because the road is exposed and the wind here is usually in your face.

At kilometre 53.5 that ends. Out of Fort Augustus the timed KOM/QOM climb to Glendoe begins, and it arrives in three steps: first a little over two kilometres at 8.3 per cent average with pitches around twelve, then, after a short dip, another two kilometres at 5.3 per cent, and finally, past Loch Tarff, a last ramp full of false summits. The high point comes at roughly kilometre 62 at about 360 metres, some 340 metres above the surface of the loch. What follows is the longest descent of the day, sixteen kilometres down towards Foyers, interrupted by a cattle grid just over the top and later by a single-track section with tight turns.

The final third along the south-eastern shore is rolling again: short sharp rises around Inverfarigaig, a flatter stretch into Dores, and then Aldourie Brae, which at that point in the day feels a great deal larger than the profile makes it look. All of this is ridden in late April on Highland roads closed completely to traffic, and that is the real character of the event: an entire lochside road with nothing coming the other way, Urquhart Castle across the water, in a field that reached 6,500 riders.

Pacing Strategy

Pacing this course is almost entirely a question of patience. For over fifty kilometres a group can ride as fast as it likes, and because the rises along the shore are short, none of them costs much on its own. In aggregate they do: sitting in for the first half rather than working on the front buys you an advantage at Fort Augustus that no amount of form replaces. The waves going off between six and just before seven mean there is nearly always a group to be found.

The day is decided between kilometre 53 and 62. The first step out of Fort Augustus is the steepest thing on the whole course and takes eight to fifteen minutes depending on your level; it is exactly long enough to overcook, and the dip that follows is too short to repair an over-hard start. Ride it seated at a cadence you can still turn at twelve per cent, and treat the second and third steps as the same climb rather than as two new ones.

The real trap sits elsewhere: in the wind on the way out and in the last fifteen kilometres. The exposed stretch beyond Inverness and the long shore road to Drumnadrochit are usually into a headwind, which is precisely what tempts riders into overpacing on the flat. And after the long descent, from Inverfarigaig onwards, there is another dozen of short ramps and finally Aldourie Brae. Judge your effort on Glendoe by how good the descent felt and you will discover there that the course is not finished with you.

Training plan for Etape Loch Ness: 12-week build

For most age-group riders the Etape Loch Ness takes between three and a half and five and a half hours. The demand is mostly steady and aerobic: a good half of the course sits in the flat band, and under two per cent of it is genuinely steep uphill. That does not make it a base ride. The course is one very long spell at group pace, a single twenty-to-thirty-minute block of climbing, and a rolling final third full of short accelerations.

The race-deciding section is the Glendoe climb at roughly the halfway point of your riding time, and what makes it decisive is not its gradient but the fact that it arrives after two hours of flat. Prepare for it accordingly: long rides with the one hard climb deliberately placed at the end of the third hour, plus threshold intervals of eight to fifteen minutes ridden seated on a gradient of eight to ten per cent.

Conditions are the second training theme. At six in the morning in late April the Highlands are cold and often damp, and the wind over open water is the defining weather of the day. Ride in wind deliberately over the winter and learn to hold steady power rather than steady speed into a flat headwind. Practise descending on wet roads too: the sixteen kilometres down from Glendoe include a cattle grid, a single-track section with tight turns, and, in Upper Foyers, drain covers and tar joins that are slippery when wet.

Finally, build in repeatability on short climbs under fatigue. The last third from Foyers on is made of ramps a few hundred metres long, and Aldourie Brae shortly before Inverness is exactly the kind of climb that is unremarkable when fresh and decisive after four hours. Short strength-endurance repeats at the end of long sessions meet that demand better than any extra volume of climbing.
