The Triathlon XS at the Frenchman Triathlon Carcans is the shortest format of the festival on the Lac de Carcans-Maubuisson: 400 metres in the lake, a short out-and-back ride to the Atlantic beach at Carcans Océan and a run along the lakeside promenade. Drafting is allowed, which turns it into a race about speed and finding the right group.
The start is a rolling start from the beach of the Lac de Maubuisson into a single swim lap; the organiser puts the water at about 18 to 19 degrees in early May. From the transition on the lakeside promenade the bike leg takes a road closed to traffic towards Carcans Océan, turns at the coast and comes back the same way.
The ride crosses the pine forest between the lake and the ocean and is only gently rolling: the road rises slowly on the way out and drops again towards the sea, then repeats the shape in reverse. What remains is 2.5 km on foot, out and back along the shaded beach promenade of Maubuisson, right on the lakeshore and past the finish area.
The XS runs on Thursday afternoon, the same day as the Triathlon M in the morning. For a first visit to the festival it covers the whole site, beach, transition and promenade, in under an hour for most starters.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
In a race this short the first phase on the bike decides most of it. With drafting allowed, a hard effort out of transition to catch a group pays off; riding alone to the turnaround costs you real time against any group.
The trap is the swim: a rolling start tempts you to treat 400 metres like a pool sprint, and arriving in transition with your heart rate through the roof costs more on the short ride than it gains.
Swim controlled-hard, sprint the first minutes on the bike, then run the 2.5 km as fast as your legs still allow.

For most age-group athletes the XS lasts 35 to 60 minutes, an almost continuously hard effort just under or at threshold, with short anaerobic spikes at the start and when bridging to a group. The decisive parts are the transitions and the first minutes on the bike.
Practise transitions out of a wetsuit, mounting with shoes clipped in, and hard one- to two-minute efforts that settle into a steady pace on a wheel.
Group riding on the road belongs in your preparation: if you have never ridden close behind others, this is where you lose contact. For the swim, short fast open-water intervals are enough, ideally in a wetsuit, because the lake is still cool in early May.
Brick sessions with a short, fast run straight off the bike prepare you for 2.5 km that start on heavy legs.
