Gede Pangrango Ultra Marathon (GPU).

At the Gede Pangrango Ultra Marathon, the GPU is the full day on the mountain: an ultra sky trail that sends you from low on the mountain to above 2,700 metres three separate times. Around 5,700 metres of climbing over 60 km asks less for running speed than for the willingness to climb steeply for hours, then start over after 40 km.

Gede Pangrango Ultra Marathon (GPU) 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The start sits just below 1,000 metres, and the day opens with its longest climb: from km 3, almost 1,600 metres of gain in a little over seven kilometres, averaging more than 20 percent. The top offers no rest, because after a drop there is another 500-plus metres in about two kilometres around km 13 before the first high point near 2,900 metres. From there the route falls for more than ten kilometres to below 1,400 metres.

The second half is the real race. From km 28 you climb back above 2,900 metres, the highest point of the day, then give away some 1,300 metres again by km 42. Then comes the third ascent: over 1,200 metres in only five kilometres, averaging 25 percent. Twelve kilometres of descent follow, down the same line you climbed at the start, back to where you began.

The race runs near Sukabumi on the mountain trails around Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango, on a network that includes Selabintana, Surya Kencana Edelweiss Park, the summit of Gede and Kandang Badak. Almost none of it is flat: if you are not going up, you are going down.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Gede Pangrango Ultra Marathon (GPU).

Start

Start under control

Plan around three long climbs, not around kilometres. Above 20 percent a brisk walk is the economical gait, so the only question is what effort you can sustain for many hours. The 20-hour limit sounds generous, yet it works out at only about three kilometres an hour.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The day is decided between km 41 and km 47. This third ascent is the steepest of the long ones, and it starts just after you have handed back nearly all the height of the second. Keep climbing evenly here and the last long descent stays under control; stop every few minutes and these five kilometres cost you more time than any others.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap is the first climb. On fresh legs it feels manageable, yet it holds more than a quarter of the race's total ascent. Overdo it and the bill arrives later, on the long drop to km 25, in tired quads that still have two big climbs to carry.

Base

Build the base

Expect 14 to 20 hours of effort. This is no running race with walking breaks but a long aerobic day made almost entirely of climbing and descending. Intensity stays low while the muscles work without pause, against the gradient on the way up and against the impact on the way down.

Core

Train race pace

The decisive phase is the third ascent, which starts after more than 4,000 metres of gain and a long descent. Train exactly that sequence: hill sessions in which a hard climb comes only after two long ups and downs, and weekends with two steep long days back to back. They teach you what climbing on tired legs feels like and which pace still holds.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The focus is steep hiking and downhill strength. Look for climbs as steep as those on Gede, and if you have no mountain, use stairs or a treadmill at full incline. Your quads need regular long descents plus strength work to survive this descending. Practise eating at regular intervals over many hours as well, because at this duration energy supply is part of the race.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Conditions follow from altitude and duration. Several hours are spent above 2,500 metres, and almost 2,000 vertical metres separate the start from the high points, which also means a temperature difference to test your layers against. Anyone using the full 20 hours will spend part of them in the dark, so rehearse steep descents by headlamp before you need them in early June.
