Sofico Gent Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map

The Sofico Gent Marathon is Belgium's spring marathon and, with around 5,650 runners on the marathon distance, it fields the country's largest marathon start list. The course begins and ends at the Topsporthal, runs once through the medieval centre and then out on a wide loop across the Scheldt meadows and the southern suburbs – World Athletics measured, and effectively without a hill.

Course & Elevation

The gun goes at nine on the Zuiderlaan beside Sport Vlaanderen Gent. Within a few kilometres you are in the old town: the course crosses the Sint-Michielsbrug, the city's best-known viewpoint, and continues along the Hoogstraat before turning north at kilometre eight to the Houtdok in the old harbour quarter.

The middle section leaves the city. The Visserij canal takes the route east; at kilometre 16 you run the Scheldekant at Destelbergen, then through the Gentbrugse Meersen – a Scheldt floodplain reserve that borders the city directly – and past the Planet Group Arena. From kilometre 26 the course swings south through Zwijnaarde and returns to the water at the Stropkaai at kilometre 36 before heading back to the Zuiderlaan.

There is essentially no climbing: the route sits between three and 23 metres above sea level, 72 percent of it is in the flat band, and not one section rates as a climb. What defines this course instead is the change of surface and setting – tight cobbles in the old town, wide quay roads by the docks, open riverbank paths on the Scheldt where nothing shelters you from a March wind. More than 18,000 people are out across the distances on the day, 3,500 of them from Ghent itself.

Pacing Strategy

On a course with not a single classified climb, nothing structures your pace for you – the finishing time comes purely from even kilometres. The first four kilometres into the old town are the only crowded, noisy part; run them deliberately two or three seconds per kilometre slower than planned, and do not let the cobbles on the Sint-Michielsbrug break your rhythm.

The race-deciding stretch is kilometres 16 to 26, out on the Scheldt and through the Gentbrugse Meersen. That is where the course is most open, emptiest and windiest, and you run it in the middle of the race, when losing pace still looks cheap. Stay in a group rather than going into the wind alone – over ten kilometres that costs more time than any hill on this route.

The trap is the long, unremarkable south from kilometre 26 through Zwijnaarde. It is flat, straight and thin on spectators, and that is exactly where runners who went too hard in the city lose their target. Give that section a deliberate fuelling and concentration rhythm – there is a station roughly every five kilometres – and save something for the last six kilometres along the Stropkaai back to the finish.

Training plan for Sofico Gent Marathon: 12-week build

As an age-group runner, expect somewhere between three and five hours. The demand is a uniform aerobic run: 72 percent of the course is flat, there is no climb to unload the muscles and no descent to change your stride. Your body repeats almost exactly the same movement for 42 kilometres.

The race is decided over the ten open kilometres on the Scheldt from kilometre 16 and in the flat south from kilometre 26 – both stretches where neither terrain nor crowds carry you. Train only on varied loops and you will underestimate how much concentration that monotony costs.

The training emphasis therefore falls on marathon-pace volume rather than hill work: long runs of 28 to 34 kilometres with 12 to 20 kilometres at goal pace in the back half, plus a weekly threshold run of 20 to 40 minutes. Do at least two long sessions on a flat, unsheltered route – a dyke, a canal path, a farm track – and run part of them deliberately alone, rehearsing exactly the situation waiting for you in the Meersen.

Late March in Ghent typically means five to twelve degrees, frequent rain and almost always a westerly wind. Cold, wet conditions with a nine o'clock start mean planning your warm-up in the start area, layering, and testing race kit under load in the rain beforehand. Cobbles in the old town alternate with riverside paths further out – train deliberately on varied surfaces so the changes do not surprise you on the day.
