In Flanders Fields Marathon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The In Flanders Fields Marathon runs the First World War front line: from the market square in Diksmuide through the IJzer polders and along the Ieperlee to Ieper, finishing on the Grote Markt after passing under the Menin Gate. Officially measured, a Boston Qualifier, and with 99 percent of it flat, the flattest marathon in Belgium.
Course & Elevation
For 2026 the start is given for the first time on the redesigned market square of Diksmuide – the old approach from Nieuwpoort is gone. The course leaves via the Vismarkt and the Kleine Dijk into the polders, crosses the IJzer at the Tervatebrug and runs past the Kleiputten nature reserve to Stuivekenskerke.
Back at the IJzer you reach the Dodengang, the preserved trench line, with Diksmuide's béguinage and belfry across the water. Past the Paxpoort and the IJzertoren – you run under the Hoge Brug at kilometre 17 – the route follows the river to the Knokkebrug at kilometre 25.3. There it leaves the IJzer for the Ieperlee heading south: Steenstraete at kilometre 33 with the memorial to the 6,000 killed in the first gas attack of 1915 and the Van Raemdonck brothers' monument, the sas at Boezinge, then the Ieper-IJzer canal with a chain of military cemeteries along the bank – Talana Farm, Bard Cottage, Essex Farm and the John McCrae memorial, where 'In Flanders Fields' was written.
At the end of the canal you are straight into the centre of Ieper. At kilometre 41.9 you run through the Menin Gate, beneath the names of 54,000 missing, and finish on the Grote Markt in front of the Cloth Hall. The course sits between minus one and 22 metres, is entirely paved, and is officially measured by an IAAF grade B measurer. The field is capped at 750.
Pacing Strategy
Ninety-nine percent of the course sits in the flat band and there is not one classified climb – this is a race for even splits and nothing else. Set your goal pace before the start and hold it two or three seconds under for the first ten kilometres; the polders roll easily and the field is small, and together those tempt you into going out too fast.
The real difficulty is the wind. Between the IJzer and the Ieperlee you run kilometre after kilometre on open dyke and canal paths without a tree for shelter, in a landscape known for exactly that. Into a headwind a group is worth more here than any pacing plan – and with only 750 starters you have to find one early, because the field spreads a long way after twenty kilometres.
The race is decided between kilometres 25 and 40 on the canal to Ieper. It is the straightest, emptiest and windiest section, and it arrives exactly when a marathon starts to hurt. Aid at km 25.3, 29.3, 33, 36.5 and 40 is close enough there for a fixed rhythm – use it as structure, because the course gives you none. Watch for the three bridge underpasses at km 17, 28 and 33, where the road narrows.
Training plan for In Flanders Fields Marathon: 12-week build
As an age-group runner you will be out for three to five hours. The effort is as uniform as a marathon gets: zero classified climbs, 99 percent flat, asphalt throughout, and essentially the same movement for forty-two kilometres. What fatigues you here is repetition, not gradient.
The last seventeen kilometres on the canal decide it. Neither terrain nor crowds carry you there, the field is thin, and the wind stands open across it. Runners who have trained on varied loops routinely underestimate how much concentration that uniformity costs.
So the emphasis is marathon-pace volume rather than strength: long runs of 28 to 34 kilometres with 12 to 20 at goal pace in the back half, plus a weekly threshold run of 20 to 40 minutes. Do at least two long runs on a long straight dyke or canal path in wind, and run one of them deliberately alone – that is the situation waiting for you from kilometre 25.
Mid-September in the Westhoek usually brings twelve to twenty degrees, changeable coastal weather and wind off the North Sea. A ten o'clock start puts the second half of your race in the midday warmth on a course with no shade. Train two or three midday sessions, test wet-weather kit under pace, and practise drinking on the move from the 50 cl bottles handed out at every station here.
