Halloween Run Rotenburg: Course, Route Profile & Map

At 16.666 kilometres the Evilthon is the longest event of the evening: five laps of the floodlit Rotenburg (Wümme) airfield, pancake flat and entirely in the dark. If you want an unusual distance between ten kilometres and a half marathon, run in fog, light and costume, this is it.

Course & Elevation

The Evilthon 16,666 K covers 5 laps of the 3.333-kilometre circuit, 16,666 kilometres in total. The race is run on the grounds of Rotenburg (Wümme) airfield, ICAO code EDXQ, on a 3.333-kilometre lap starting and finishing at the event area. The organiser dresses the loop for the evening with lights, fog and Halloween staging; the gun goes at 6 p.m., which in October already means darkness, and once the last runners are in a firework display over the airfield is planned.

There is no profile to speak of: around 85 per cent of the lap is level, the rest consists of undulations of a few metres, and each lap adds up to eight metres of climbing. No section registers as a climb. What makes the evening demanding is not the terrain but the darkness, the exposed setting and the repetition of the same loop. Over the full distance that comes to 41 metres. The cut-off for all lap events is 8 p.m.

This is the premiere: the Halloween-Run-Rotenburg is held for the first time in 2026, organised by bremenRAcing UG, which stages its longer-established Halloween-Run-Bremen at the Werdersee the following day. Timing is by transponder, there are aid stations on course and at the finish, a costume competition and a finisher medal. An airfield at the end of October is open, windy, damp ground, so warm dry clothing for after the finish is not a luxury here.

Pacing Strategy

Five identical laps without terrain means the entire structure of the race comes from you, not from the course. Because every lap event from 3.333 to 16.666 kilometres starts together at 6 p.m., the field goes out considerably faster in lap one than makes sense for the Evilthon. Latch onto people who are finished after 3.333 kilometres and you pay for it from lap three.

The distance sits between the familiar markers: 16.666 kilometres is too long to attack like a ten and too short for marathon pace. A realistic approach is a pace just under what you could hold for ten kilometres, sustained for roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter.

The race is decided on lap four. The start momentum has gone, the finish is still two and a half kilometres away, it is dark, and the course offers no external stimulus at all. Run the first three laps to a set lap time and you can hold form here and lift on the last. The lap format helps in practice: you pass the same point five times and can compare your splits directly.

Training plan for Halloween Run Rotenburg: 12-week build

Just under seventeen flat kilometres takes roughly 60 to 110 minutes depending on your level. The demand is a steady effort at or just below anaerobic threshold over an unusually long stretch, with no recovery phases, because the terrain supplies none.

Training should focus on threshold work and long, even tempo runs: intervals of 2,000 to 3,000 metres at goal race pace, plus continuous runs of 40 to 60 minutes at the top of the aerobic range. Hill training buys essentially nothing here; what counts is holding a pace for an hour without external cues.

Two things are specifically worth doing. First, a simulation run on a short fixed loop of two to four kilometres so the monotony and the repeated passing of the same point are familiar. Second, at least two runs in genuine darkness: footing, pace perception and orientation all change noticeably without light, and an airfield in fog is a very unstructured environment.

The date falls at the end of October in northern Lower Saxony, in the evening on open ground: cold, often damp air and wind with nothing to shelter behind. Train a few hard sessions in cool, wet conditions, plan a warm-up that keeps you warm until the 6 p.m. start, and have dry clothes ready for afterwards.
