The HaWei50 is the flattest ultramarathon on the German calendar: ten five-kilometre laps around the Hardtsee at Ubstadt-Weiher, without a single road crossing and with barely 50 metres of climbing over the whole distance. Course & Elevation
The race covers ten laps of a five-kilometre loop around the Hardtsee, officially measured to WA/AIMS standard. Start and finish sit inside the Freizeitzentrum Hardtsee, with everything on one site: parking, toilets, showers, bag drop and a heated marquee are all at the line. The loop follows the lakeshore and includes a short out-and-back spur in the north that is covered twice.
The profile barely exists: around five metres of climbing per lap, no rise that counts as a climb, and no section that forces anyone to walk. The route never touches public roads and has no road crossing at all, while two spectator shuttle paths cut across the loop so supporters reach the course several times a lap. There is one aid station, passed every five kilometres, and runners may set up their own tables in the feed zone.
The race is organised by Laufsportgemeinschaft Weiher, carries the International Association of Ultrarunners Silver Label and is eligible for ranking lists; in 2027 the German 50 kilometre championship is decided alongside the open race. The start is at ten o'clock on a Saturday in late February, with a 17:30 cut-off. Course records of 2:53:05 for men and 3:20:58 for women show how fast the loop is.
Pacing Strategy
On a course with no climb and no descent there is not one moment when the pace drops by itself. The HaWei50 is therefore run as an even effort well below threshold: the first three laps should feel clearly too slow, because at this distance a lap run too fast only becomes visible after 30 kilometres.
Laps seven and eight, kilometres 30 to 40, decide the race. Base endurance carries you until then; after that it comes down to whether fuelling and pace matched. Because every lap is identical there is no external reference, and many runners lose more time there to fading concentration than to genuine fatigue. The lap turnarounds are the best metronome: ten fixed checkpoints at which to reconcile pace and intake.
The biggest trap is the cold combined with the flat profile. Late February temperatures are usually in single digits, and because you can neither work uphill nor recover downhill, the load stays identical for hours while the body has to produce heat as well. Matching fluid and calorie intake to the low temperature rather than to thirst makes a marked difference over the closing laps.
Training plan for HaWei50: 12-week build
For age-group runners the 50 kilometres take roughly four to seven and a half hours; the 17:30 cut-off is exactly seven and a half hours from the ten o'clock start. The demand is a steadily aerobic effort without peaks: no climbs, no descents, no changes of pace but your own. That makes the race fast but monotonously loading, because the same muscles work identically for hours.
Everything beyond marathon distance decides it. Runners coming from road marathons have no experience of the final eight kilometres, and on this course that is exactly where the time sits. Getting used to a lapped circuit matters just as much: ten repetitions of the same loop demand a mental routine that only lapped training builds.
Late February conditions belong explicitly in the preparation. At around five degrees, often damp and with wind coming off the open water, a flat course chills you faster than one with a profile. A change of clothing at the turnaround, a tested layering system and a fuelling plan followed even when thirst is absent are part of the performance here.
So the build should emphasise two or three long runs beyond 35 kilometres, at least one of them on a short circuit with full fuelling simulation, extended blocks at goal race pace at the end of long runs, and moderate strength work for trunk and calves, because a completely flat course loads the same muscle chain throughout. Anyone also running the HaWei by night event the evening before should treat it deliberately as an easy shakeout.
