Course & Elevation

The gun goes at 08:30 on Badstrasse. The route crosses the Goetzenturm bridge to the right bank of the Neckar and runs through Sontheim to Flein, where at about kilometre 8.6 the one genuine climb of the day begins: 1.4 kilometres and just under 70 metres of vertical up to the Haigern above Talheim, the highest point on the course. Two short ramps follow at kilometres 11.7 and 13 before the route turns west.

The long middle section runs through Lauffen am Neckar, where the river is crossed a second time, into the Brackenheim vineyards via Duerrenzimmern and Neipperg by the Moenchsbergsee. Only a small rise at kilometre 25.5 interrupts it. The course then returns towards Heilbronn via Nordheim, with a final 750 metre pull of almost 30 vertical metres at kilometre 35.5, before the half marathon route joins in Klingenberg and the field suddenly gets much denser.

The whole loop is asphalt, closed to traffic, officially measured and marked at every kilometre. There are no long flat stretches between the climbs: a good 37 per cent of the distance is level, roughly 30 per cent each goes up and down, and less than one per cent is genuinely steep. This is a course that ripples constantly. Finishing inside Heilbronn's Frankenstadion, with spectators in the stand, is the sharp contrast to the quiet kilometres out among the vines.

Pacing Strategy

This course demands a deliberately controlled first half. Everything runs easily and in a crowd up to kilometre 8.6, and that is exactly where most Trollinger marathons are ruined: run race pace on the valley floor and the Haigern puts you in a place you will not recover from over the remaining 32 kilometres. Treat the long climb as a steady, clearly reduced effort and let go of the watch for that kilometre and a half.

The race is not decided on the hill but on the section after it. Between Lauffen and Nordheim lies a long, rolling stretch with few landmarks and often few spectators. A constant rhythm over the small waves matters more than pushing every crest. The short rises at kilometres 11.7, 13 and 25.5 are too small to attack but long enough to cost you if you insist on holding pace over them.

The last climb at kilometre 35.5 arrives exactly where a marathon starts to hurt. Plan it as a section of its own rather than as an interruption. After that come six fast kilometres through Klingenberg and Boeckingen into the stadium, where the half marathon runners joining the course can deceive you: their pace is not your pace. The 08:30 start is an advantage, because the later kilometres out in the Unterland already fall in the warm part of an April day.

For an age-group athlete the effort lasts roughly three to five hours depending on level. For most of that it is a steady aerobic run, but one that never quite settles: only a good third of the course is truly level and the rest ripples gently up and down without pause.

The first asks for discipline and economical uphill running at easy intensity, the second for strength endurance under fatigue. Train them separately: long runs with a sustained climb built into the first third, and separate sessions with short climbs tacked onto the end of an already long run.

The constant undulation is the second focus. Athletes who only train on flat loops lose time here because pace has to be rediscovered at every change of rhythm. Run your long sessions on gently rolling terrain and practise staying even over crests instead of accelerating. Downhill running at race pace is worth adding too, since almost 30 per cent of the course descends and loads the quadriceps eccentrically.

Late April in the Heilbronn Unterland, one of Germany's warmest wine regions, can already be properly warm, and the vineyard sections offer little shade. A handful of runs in late-morning sun and a rehearsed drinking and carbohydrate plan for a four-hour effort belong in the preparation just as much as the hill work.
