the iLumen Bilzen 111 Triathlon: Course, Route Profile & Map
The iLumen Bilzen 111 Triathlon is a race over a distance almost nobody else offers: one kilometre of swimming in the Albertkanaal, 100 kilometres of bike, 10 kilometres of run. All of it happens in the same place, at the Kanaalbar near Bilzen, and all of it is flat. That makes the day predictable and unforgiving at the same time, because there is nowhere in the terrain to hide.
Course & Elevation
The day starts in the Albertkanaal. It is a rolling start, three or four athletes at a time jumping in from a low edge; there is no warm-up swim. The kilometre runs out and back, and the way then leads across the Kanaaldijkstraat straight into the day's single transition area, which serves as both T1 and T2.
On the bike come four laps of a good 25 kilometres along the canal to Vroenhoven and back, non-drafting, with a feed at the bridge from the second lap on. The run is then three out-and-back laps of 3.35 kilometres on the towpath, again right at the water. Because every lap of every discipline passes the Kanaalbar, you see the same spot roughly a dozen times over the day.
That is the character of the race: no city circuit, no mountain backdrop, but a canal in the Limburg borderland between Bilzen and the Meuse, with dyke roads, nature reserves on the bank and a bar-terrace crowd looking straight into transition. The field is capped at 600 places, the cut-offs are 35 minutes for the swim, four hours to the end of the bike and 5:30 at the finish. Wetsuits are compulsory at 16 degrees water temperature and below, and forbidden at 23 and above.
Pacing Strategy
The arithmetic of this race is unusually simple, and that is precisely the risk. The swim is short enough to overcook without paying for it at once, and the bike is fast enough that every mistake only becomes visible on the towpath. So swim under control: the rolling start removes the scrum, which means there is no reason to sprint the first half.
The day is decided in the second half of the bike. One hundred flat kilometres without drafting invite you to use speed as the yardstick; ride the third lap as confirmation and you will run the third run lap on emergency power. Set your bike effort deliberately below what feels easy on this course, and plan your fuelling from the second lap on, because there is none before it.
The run is the reckoning. Three identical out-and-back laps by the water give you not one reason to change pace, and no shade. Plan the first lap as the slowest, take something to drink at every pass, and expect the turnaround to feel further away the third time than the first.
Training plan for the iLumen Bilzen 111 Triathlon: 12-week build
For the 111 kilometres, reckon on just under four to five and a half hours depending on level; the official limit is 5:30, with 35 minutes for the swim and four hours to the end of the bike. The effort is unusually uniform across the day, a long aerobic one without the anaerobic spikes a hilly race imposes.
The distance is the real peculiarity. At 100 kilometres of bike it sits well above the Olympic distance and noticeably below the middle distance, and at 10 kilometres the run is short enough to feel fast and long enough for a bike mistake to ruin it. Athletes coming from short course underestimate the time in the saddle; those coming from the middle distance underestimate how hard this one is ridden.
Preparation should emphasise two things. First, long steady bike sessions in race position, two to three hours on the bars on flat open roads, because nothing on this course lifts you out of it. Second, brick runs: 20 to 40 minutes straight off the long ride, run on flat ground and deliberately evenly, because that is exactly what race day asks for. Open-water practice in a canal belongs in the plan too, since dark, narrow water demands sighting without a clear view and the jump from the edge is worth rehearsing.
On conditions: in mid-May the canal water can still be cold, so a wetsuit decision and a practised exit belong in the plan. On land, open Limburg canal country mostly means wind on the bike and unshaded sun on the towpath. Rehearse fuelling and drinking in the warmth, and schedule at least two long bike sessions in a genuine headwind.
