Kaslo Wild Ultra.

The Lake Stage opens the Kaslo Wild Ultra on Friday and, at ten kilometres, is the shortest of the three stages. Its shape is simple: flat out, one steep hill, flat back. How you handle that hill sets your time and, if you are racing one of the challenges, the state of your legs for the rest of the weekend.

Kaslo Wild Ultra 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

The loop starts at around 550 metres and stays practically level for a little over two kilometres before it begins to lift. Just before km 3 comes the climb that defines the stage: 263 metres of gain in two kilometres, and it gets harder as it goes. Nearly 200 of those metres fall in the final kilometre to the high point, a little above 820 metres.

The way down starts without a transition. The course drops almost 190 metres in the first three quarters of a kilometre, then eases and is back at the bottom by km 7.6. From there it stays level all the way to where it began.

Underfoot, singletrack alternates with wide gravel trails, plus about a kilometre and a half of road. A little over four of the ten kilometres are flat, which is what separates Friday from the rest of the weekend: here you can properly run, whereas Saturday's Mountain Stage heads into rugged mountain terrain. Both challenges begin with this stage, the 32 km Half Wild Challenge as well as the 85 km Full Wild Challenge.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Kaslo Wild Ultra.

Start

Start under control

Treat the stage as three races: a flat run-up, the hill, a flat run-out. Run the first part briskly but clearly below the pace you would hold over ten flat road kilometres. Your legs should still be quiet at the foot of the climb; arrive breathing hard and you have already given away the best of it.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The stage is decided on the second kilometre of the climb. At around 20 percent, a strong hike is faster and cheaper than a jog for most runners, so measure effort and ignore the watch. Reach the top still able to run straight away.

Finish

Spend what is left

The trap sits just past the high point. The steep drop tempts you either to brake with your quads or to let go completely, and both come back at you: on the flat afterwards, where the last two kilometres suddenly feel heavy, and even more in a challenge, where the next stage needs those same muscles. On the Full Wild Challenge a mountain day follows as soon as Saturday. Better to leave a few seconds on the descent.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Kaslo Wild Ultra: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

Age-group runners are out for roughly 1:00 to 1:30 hours on this stage. Short as it is, the effort is far from even: two flat, aerobic sections frame twenty to thirty hard minutes on the hill and a descent that mainly loads the muscles.

Core

Train race pace

The key session is long hill repeats. Find a double-digit gradient and build towards efforts of ten to fifteen minutes, practising the switch between running and fast hiking. Since this climb steepens as it goes, each repeat should finish harder than it started, with its last section on the steepest ground you can find.

Specific

Rehearse the course

The descent needs its own preparation. Run steep stretches of singletrack and gravel downhill under control with short, quick steps, then go straight into a few flat kilometres at a brisk pace. That shift from braking to flat running is where the final two kilometres cost time, and it can be trained.

Race week

Arrive fresh

If you are starting a challenge, build in some weekends with consecutive sessions before race day: a short, hard hill run like this one first, the longer session the next day or the one after. The Half Wild Challenge leaves a free day in between, whereas on the Full Wild Challenge the 53 kilometres follow straight on Saturday. It shows you what Friday really costs.
