Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon.

The Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon has crossed a barrier island south of Charleston for almost five decades, through live-oak forest and along salt marsh out to the island's east end by the Ocean Course. Elevation does not come into it: this is a dead-flat, USATF-certified Boston qualifier decided entirely by pacing discipline. Also known as Kiawah Island Marathon and Kiawah Marathon.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon 2026: Course, Route Profile & Map

Start and finish are in West Beach Village at the western end of the island, by the West Beach Conference Center. The opening miles run east over Greensward Road, the Kiawah Island Parkway and Sea Forest Drive, then Governors Drive takes you on its long loop through the northeastern neighbourhoods to the edge of the marsh. From there Ocean Course Drive carries the course out to the island's east end, along High Dunes Lane and round a loop through Victory Bay Lane, and back the same way.

The second half is a puzzle of residential roads: Flyway Drive, Bufflehead Drive, Goldeneye Drive, Governors Drive again, then Surfsong Road, Green Dolphin Way and Sea Forest Drive heading west. Several stretches are run twice, and the mile 4 and mile 21 markers stand almost on the same spot. Low Oak Woods Road and the Parkway finally bring you back to West Beach.

The island sits only a few metres above the sea and the whole lap stays between roughly one and five metres. What you see is tall live oaks, maritime forest, salt marsh and large holiday homes. The roads stay open to traffic during the race, aid comes every two to three miles, and on race morning you reach the island by shuttle from the parking fields at Freshfields Village.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon.

Start

Start under control

With about 40 metres of climbing over 42 kilometres there is nothing here that forces a change of pace. That makes the course fast, but it also removes every natural brake: the plan is one even goal pace from the first mile to the last, with a first half that has to feel easy.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

The marathon is decided in the second part, once you have come back from the east end and turn into the web of residential roads around Flyway Drive and Governors Drive. Frequent turns, stretches you have already run and few spectators make miles 15 to 22 mentally heavy. Hold pace there by feel alone and you leak seconds per mile without noticing.

Finish

Spend what is left

The classic trap is the start in cool December air: on a flat course in fresh temperatures, an opening pace that is too quick feels free. Add the open roads, which keep you to the side, and do not bank on running the tangents when the street is not closed.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Kiawah Island Golf Resort Marathon: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

For a competitive age-group runner this marathon takes somewhere between three and five hours. The effort is purely aerobic and uniform: with no climbs there are no spikes, but the same muscles carry every single step of the distance.

Core

Train race pace

What decides the race is the ability to hold goal pace on flat road after 25 kilometres with nothing external to set the rhythm. Long runs finishing with a block at marathon pace on flat asphalt are therefore the core, ideally on routes with plenty of turns so your rhythm does not depend on long straights.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Conditions are Lowcountry December: the race runs rain or shine, and temperatures usually sit between about 4 and 16 degrees Celsius. You often start cold and run into mild air, so rehearse layers you can shed on the way, and do at least one long run in the rain.

Race week

Arrive fresh

Because the course has no hills, the load shifts to calves, Achilles tendons and hip flexors repeating the same movement for hours. Strength and stability work for those areas pays off more here than hill sessions.
