Novant Health Charlotte Marathon: Course, Elevation & Route Profile
The Novant Health Charlotte Marathon is a city marathon that never quite goes flat: from the start on South Tryon Street in Uptown it heads out through Charlotte's residential neighbourhoods and back to a finish at 4th and Mint Street. Running it well means absorbing a constant roll of short rises without losing rhythm.
Course & Elevation
The course is one big loop from and back to Uptown, run by the Charlotte Sports Foundation and on a revised line for 2026. The steepest pitch of the day comes almost immediately, about 36 m of climbing in under half a kilometre, with a second one near km 3. After that the route stays in a narrow band between roughly 200 and 240 m, yet hardly a kilometre is level: a third of the course goes up and a third goes down.
As a setting it is a run through tree-lined boulevards and old residential streets. The route strings the city's neighbourhoods together, among them Dilworth and Myers Park with their historic homes, then Plaza-Midwood and the arts district of NoDa. It is asphalt throughout, usually on a cool November morning.
The highest stretch sits between km 27 and 33, after which the course drops back towards the centre. The road lifts gently once more shortly before the end, then the finish arrives in Uptown beside Truist Field.
Pacing Strategy
Pace by effort rather than a fixed split. The climbs are short but many, and anyone who forces each one at goal pace pays for it after km 30. Let the pace drift a little on the rises and take it back easily on the descents.
The first ramp straight after the start is the biggest trap: adrenaline and crowding tempt you to run it far too fast. Take it deliberately easy, the race is not decided there.
It is decided on the high stretch between km 27 and 33, where the constant rolling adds up with fatigue. If you can still run evenly there, the drop back towards the city works for you.
Training plan for Novant Health Charlotte Marathon: 12-week build
For most age-group runners the Charlotte Marathon takes three to five and a half hours. The effort is mainly aerobic, but it is lifted again and again by many short climbs, without a single long hill.
So build your long runs on rolling roads rather than on a flat path or greenway. The aim is to run rises of a few hundred metres at constant effort and to take free speed on the way down without braking.
Specifically, a tempo block on hilly ground late in a long run is valuable, because the decisive stretch comes after km 27. Strength work for quads and calves makes the many short descents easier to absorb.
The race is held in mid-November with an early morning start. Expect cool temperatures on the start line and practise fuelling with gels, since gels are handed out on course.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
