Lakeland Trails Hawkshead.

The 10K at Lakeland Trails Hawkshead saves its real work for the final third: after a rolling first half and a flat stretch along the valley floor comes a long, at times very steep climb before the run back into the village. Preparing for it means preparing for a late hill, not for an even pace.

Lakeland Trails Hawkshead 2027: Course, Elevation & Route Profile

Start and finish are at Hawkshead Recreation Ground, at the southern end of the village. The loop opens with a short ramp just under a kilometre in, then rolls up to around a hundred metres above the start before dropping away again and running flat along the valley floor for nearly two kilometres from the five-kilometre mark. The route follows marked footpaths and bridleways, with marshals at the junctions.

The section that decides the race begins at 6.8 km: almost two kilometres uphill at close to ten percent on average, with short pitches above twenty percent that will have many runners walking. Higher up the view opens over the Windermere country where Beatrix Potter lived. The Lakeland Trails event at Hawkshead also takes in a mile-long climb on an ancient coffin trail, one of the old paths along which the dead were once carried to the churchyard.

From the high point the loop drops quickly back to the Recreation Ground. There is one water station on the way, and because the Lake District can still see snow in April, warm and waterproof clothing belongs in your kit.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.

Pacing Strategy

How to pace Lakeland Trails Hawkshead.

Start

Start under control

The first six kilometres invite speed: short undulations, then a flat valley floor where the pace feels cheap. That is the trap. Run the valley on a personal-best effort and you arrive at the foot of the long climb with your heart rate already high, and lose more there in a few minutes than you banked before.

Mid-race

Hold your rhythm

Treat the climb from 6.8 km as a race of its own. Power-hike the steepest pitches deliberately, long strides and hands on thighs, rather than letting your running form collapse, and break back into a run as soon as the gradient eases.

Finish

Spend what is left

The descent back to the village is where you gain time if your legs still hold. Wet or slippery April paths can take your footing away quickly there, so run it alert rather than flat out.

Training plan · 12 weeks

Training plan for Lakeland Trails Hawkshead: 12-week build

Base

Build the base

For most age-group runners this loop takes somewhere between just under an hour and an hour and a half. Most of it is steady aerobic work over rolling and flat ground; the peak arrives late and all at once, when the long climb pushes your heart rate to threshold for ten to twenty minutes.

Core

Train race pace

That makes hill repeats of five to ten minutes most useful when you do them at the end of a run, not fresh. An hour of easy running that finishes on a steep slope rehearses the order of this course better than any track session. Practise switching between brisk hiking and running on the steep ground as part of it.

Specific

Rehearse the course

Train on footpaths and farm tracks rather than only on tarmac, and include downhill running on uneven ground so the return to the village does not end in your quads.

Race week

Arrive fresh

In April the Lake District can bring cold, rain and even snow. Do some sessions in the clothing you plan to race in, and in shoes that grip on wet grass and stone.
