The 250 km is the complete Liège-Bastogne-Liège experience: from Banneux deep into the Ardennes over the Côte de Saint-Roch at Houffalize and past Bastogne, then back north over La Roche-en-Ardenne into the classic's finale – La Redoute at kilometre 205, the Roche-aux-Faucons at 226. Around 3,700 metres of climbing spread across a full day in the saddle.
Course & Elevation
The start window is between half past six and half past seven in the morning on the Rue de l'Esplanade in Banneux. The first half runs south down the Ourthe valley, deeper and deeper into the Ardennes. At kilometre 96 the Côte de Saint-Roch rises out of Houffalize – 900 metres, the first 600 of them between 13 and 18 percent – and shortly after, at kilometre 111, you pass Bastogne, the turning point of the loop.
The way back is the harder half. At kilometre 140 a climb of almost four kilometres and 264 metres begins above La Roche-en-Ardenne, the longest on the whole route, followed by the ramps at Fanzel and Harre on the Manhay plateau. From kilometre 190 you are in La Doyenne's real finale: Aywaille at 196, then at kilometre 205 the Côte de La Redoute – 1.6 kilometres averaging 8.8 percent, and a great deal more than that on the wall above Remouchamps.
The last quarter decides it. At kilometre 226 you cross the Ourthe at Hony and turn straight into the Rue d'Avister, the steep first kilometre of the Roche-aux-Faucons; after a short dip the second part follows. The final climb is the 3.4-kilometre drag out of Tilff at kilometre 235, and then it rolls back to Banneux. The route moves between 82 and 559 metres and 40 percent of it is downhill – the Ardennes are a chain of short hard climbs with equally steep descents between them, not one long pass. Five feed stations serve the 250 km.
Pacing Strategy
The one sentence that matters at this distance: the race starts at kilometre 190. Everything before that is preparation, and if you ride the Ardennes climbs like race climbs you will not arrive at La Redoute at all. Only three percent of the route is in the steep-uphill band, but it arrives in dozens of short portions – and it adds up if you take every one of them into the red.
The trap is, paradoxically, the Côte de Saint-Roch at kilometre 96. It is the steepest ramp of the day, it comes early, you are fresh, and everyone around you is racing. Over 600 metres at 13 to 18 percent you can burn more in four minutes than you will win back in the following 100 kilometres. Ride it in your easiest gear, seated, calm.
The day is decided between kilometres 205 and 240. La Redoute, the Roche-aux-Faucons and the climb out of Tilff arrive within thirty kilometres of each other, after more than two hundred. Plan your fuelling so that you eat properly at the fourth station before entering that finale, and with a seven o'clock April start expect a considerably colder morning than afternoon: the Ardennes descents are long and fast, and La Redoute rides much worse on a chilled body.
Training plan for Liège-Bastogne-Liège Challenge: 12-week build
For 250 kilometres and 3,700 metres of climbing, reckon on eight to twelve hours of riding against a course that closes at 20:00. The effort is essentially a very long endurance ride with forty short, hard strength efforts threaded through it – aerobic over the distance, repeatedly anaerobic on the ramps.
The climbs from kilometre 200 decide it, and their decisive quality is not the gradient but the timing. La Redoute on its own is manageable for most riders; after two hundred kilometres of the Ardennes it is not. Descending skill matters just as much: 40 percent of the route runs downhill, often on narrow, undulating forest roads, and poor descending costs more time and energy here than weak climbing.
So build around very long rides with the climbing loaded at the back: six- to eight-hour days where the hardest ascents fall in the final ninety minutes. Add repeated intervals of two to six minutes at threshold with short recoveries – that is exactly the pattern of the Ardennes ramps – and deliberate descending practice on technical roads.
Late-April conditions in the Ardennes are the second training factor. The start is at half past six in often single-figure temperatures, the Manhay plateau sits above 500 metres and is wind-exposed, and the afternoon can be fifteen degrees warmer than the morning. Train rides of this length with real clothing management, practise eating in the saddle over many hours – five feed stations across 250 kilometres means long gaps – and plan for a wind vest you can put on and take off for the fast, cold descents.
