The marathon at the Harmonie Mutuelle Marathon 10-20K Tours leaves the Loire embankment in Tours for the vineyards of Rochecorbon and Vouvray, reaches Vernou-sur-Brenne and returns along the river into the old town. The climb onto the vineyard plateau just past Rochecorbon shapes the first half; the second half is flat and fast.
The start is on the Quai Paul Bert on the north bank of the Loire. The first five kilometres run flat and east along the river past Marmoutier. Beyond Rochecorbon, at km 6, the course climbs about 40 metres in just over half a kilometre onto the plateau where the Vouvray vines grow, with short ramps near ten percent. Up there it rolls between 90 and 115 metres until about km 14, then drops over three kilometres back to the valley towards Vernou-sur-Brenne, where the Marathon Duo hands over after 20.7 km.
The second half is the mirror image: back along the Loire through Vouvray and Rochecorbon with almost no height change, before the course crosses the Pont Mirabeau into the city. It then runs via the Place Jean Jaurès and through old Tours to the finish on the Place Anatole France at the south end of the Pont Wilson. The organiser calls the route varied and demanding, a mix of vineyards, riverbank and historic townscape, with bands playing along the way. This course arrived in 2026 together with the new start on the Quai Paul Bert, and the organiser keeps it for 2027.

Climb categories follow the road-cycling convention and rate the terrain itself (length and gradient) regardless of sport: Cat. 4 marks the easiest rated climbs, Cat. 1 the hardest, and HC (hors catégorie, “beyond categorization”) is reserved for the most brutal ascents. Short climbs below the Cat. 4 threshold stay unrated.
Split the race into three parts. The flat first five kilometres tempt you to bank time for the climb; run them at goal pace, because the climb beyond Rochecorbon costs more in heart rate than in seconds if you run it by feel rather than by the watch.
The plateau between km 7 and km 14 decides how much you have left for the second half. The rollers there are short but frequent: hold your effort steady and let the pace drop a little uphill instead of attacking every crest. Let the descent back to the valley roll, without braking and without pushing.
The real trap comes after that. From km 20 the course is flat to the finish, and anyone who overspent on the plateau loses time exactly where the course is fastest. The organiser's pacers run evenly across the profile and are a good reference for a balanced race.

For most age-group runners this marathon takes between three and five and a half hours, with a six-hour cut-off. It is a steady aerobic effort with a real climb and a rolling plateau in its first third; after that it is a pure flat marathon.
The decisive part is the transition from the plateau into the flat second half. Train with long runs of 30 to 34 km that are hilly in the first half and flat at marathon pace in the second, so you learn to run evenly after climbing.
Add one or two sessions a week with short climbs of 300 to 600 metres, for example hill repeats at threshold, so the ramps beyond Rochecorbon do not break your rhythm. Combine them with marathon-pace segments on flat tarmac, because the last 20 km along the Loire and through the city ask for even pace with no help from the terrain.
The race is held at the end of September with an early morning start by the river. Plan your fuelling around the aid stations every five kilometres and practise drinking from cups on the run.
